... nutritionists can’t make up their minds, when in truth it’s a question of weighing up the pros and cons. It was common ‘knowledge’ in times past that the more protein you got, the healthier you were. Nutritionists have since discovered that you need less protein than was thought. Additionally, almost everything contains protein, including potatoes, beans, bread and pasta, its not just meat. And plant protein is just as effective as animal protein, only without the side effects of saturated fats...more

Crowned Review Health Issues for Vegetarian: Is Eating Your Greens Enough? (2109 words)

I've been a vegetarian for over 16 years now and that means that since the age of 4 I haven't eaten any meat. To help tell you my story I have seperated this opinion into my personal story and what I went through with my family and also the bare facts about how to be safe - for those who are maybe the parent or a new vegetarian. I hope it helps. MY STORY: Before anyone has a go at my parents saying they forced me into it, they didnt. I was taken on a school trip to a slaughter house (which raises another ethical question at the age of 4!) and saw enough there to put me off meat forever. I was even able to sneak away from my group and ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review How to be a healthy vegetarian (714 words)

Yes, human beings are omnivores. The easiest way to get all the nutrients your body needs is to follow a healthy, balanced diet with items from all the main food groups, and as some of those groups are largely made up from meat and fish products, then naturally it is easier to do so on a diet that includes these products. Unfortunately, meat products do contain some of the highest fat and cholesterol-building substances available in foods, but eliminate or cut down on those and you’re on the way to a healthy diet. Good, now we’ve got that argument out the way, I can begin to explain my take on the whole meat-free debacle. The point is, yes, it ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Health Issues for Vegetarian: save the cows V eat the cows (1918 words)

Instead of arguing why meat is bad for you, I’m going to argue why a plant-based diet is GOOD for you. I’m not belittling a healthy, balanced diet, including meat, I’m just stating that in my opinion, a wholly plant based one can be an equally healthy way to live. A bit about hypocrites- First of all, I recently had to deal with a situation I found rather amusing. I was at work (I work in a small general store which has an emphasis on deli foods, plus has a good range of organic and veggie stuff) and I was chatting to a veggie woman I know rather well, and she was recommending we bring in a range of rice milks as they taste better than Soya ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Don't Meat Your Maker - be Healthy, be a Veggie!!! (981 words)
by - written on 15/11/01 (Very useful, 72 readings)

What can I tell anyone about being a veggie? I’ve been vegetarian for 28 years now (since I was six). Whoops, given something away there! I’ve been a veggie for so long, that I don’t really think about it much anymore. Everyone knows I’m veggie, and I don’t have to inform too many people these days. When I go for dinner/lunch at a friends house, they know what not to feed me. These days it’s easy. It hasn’t always been that way. When I was first out there in the big wide world, socialising and dining out, things were different. To start with sixteen years ago veggie food in restaurants, amounted to an omelette. Or just ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Health Issues for Vegetarian: So what do you eat? (392 words)
by - written on 20/09/01 (Very useful, 85 readings)

I am asked this question so regularly when I tell people that I am a vegan. I have been vegan for about 5 years now. Another thing that people always say to me is 'you look well on it'. They say this because I am overweight and most people assume that vegans are going to be thin sticks. I am always very offended when people say this to me. They might as well say 'you look too fat to be a vegan'. The problem with being vegan is that when you eat out the only thing that you can normally eat is either chips, salds or baked potato and beans. As I tend to be a chip addict I would go for those rather than a boring salad or jacket potato. A ...  Read the complete review
