Advantages: healty lifestyle, no real weight problems, less health problems

Disadvantages: eating out in restaurants

I have been a vegetarian,for 33years,since the age of 13.
I have seen a boon in people turning to vegetarianism due to meat scares.mine is purely a moral thing and killing another animal to eat is something i cannot live with.
The reason for me,is because,i think killing millions of animals, for the profits of,farmers, supermarkets, etc,is morally wrong.
But this is my opinion only.I would never impose this on anyone, heck a healthy lifestyle,is hard to promote.
My husband is a meat eater.and i dont have a problem with that,i even cook it for him(yuk).

If you knew, what farmers did to their animals to make them fit for slaughter, you would surely think twice before you sat down to your roast on a sunday.

My husband, worked in farm management, with a huge dairy herd for many years. He,was forced to inject the animals with growth hormones and all sorts of banned substances, which farmers can get on black market.

Also, the dangers of catching a disease from eating meat with say, foot and mouth,or swine fever as in pigs,is higher than any government will tell you.

The incidences of slaughter houses in the news, failing to follow even basic hygiene is something we should be really concerned about. The staff, wear dirty overalls, changed once a week if you are lucky, they fail often, to wash their hands after they have been to the toilet, all this can lead to salmonella, and in elderly and pregnant women, can be deadly..

Its still a nightmare, eating out in local pubs and restaurants, all they seem to offer is vegetarian lasagne(i know all you veggies are nodding frantically at that!),or a salad.

I went to a pub recently and they offered me a roast minus the meat,i think vegetarianism must have passed them by.

I cannot believe that we are still treated like lentil munching hippies, its the 21st century and i still get looked at like im from planet plonker, for demanding vegetarian food. Its ludicrous.
But on a
happier note, most supermarkets are finally getting the message, and stocking a few veggie items.
However,i still freak out when i see that they put frozen veggie items,in with half frozen chicken.

Quorn is my saviour, its a mushroom based meat substitute, and i must confess to cooking this for friends and they have no idea its not real meat.

Another thing that makes me laugh is people asking if i have pets, and if they are vegetarian,.tut. Animals such as cats, dogs are meat eaters and why would i make any pet i had eat a veggie diet?i wouldnt.I believe in free choice for me.

I dont agree, that vegetarians should make their pets follow their morals, its unfair, and dare i say cruel..

May i finally add,if you are a vegetarian, and dont know this, try adding vitamin B12 full strength, to you supplements.it really helps and we all need protien,so check your food products for protien content and essential vitamins..

I`m afraid i had no sympathy with farmers during foot and mouth,my sympathies were with the poor animals, who were killed. if they were diseased or not.And any-one who profits from raising and killing animals for a living deserve all they get....

VU op, i especially agree with you about the animals part. I'm a vegan and keep a dog and forcing him to eat mashed up processed veggie dog food is as cruel as pig farming itsself. However neither do I feed him on processed meat crap like Pedigree chum; I've been to the vet to get him a natural diet combing all the things he needs. However, isn't this op supposed to be about health issues?

ummm collinwood, thats why i advised everyone to use B12 and thats where you can get your protien, health problems are rare in comparisson to meat eater.we have nearly no heart by pass surgeries due to not eating meat.and also i suggested quorn as a protien top up.meat is not essential to our diet.sensible eating, friuts veggies and maybe supplements are as good as you get and better than clogging up arteries or getting high colestral by eating dead animals
