An amazing experience (Home Birth Versus Hospital Birth)

Advantages: Being in your own home, you call the shots

Disadvantages: Keeping an open mind that you may have to go into hospital

When I was pregnant with my first 2 children a home birth wasnt given as an option. Fast forward to 5 years later and finding out im pregnant, im looking at birthing options in my area, and disover home births are a definate option!!

So on my first midwife appointment I tell her I definately want a home birth. She said that because I had normal births with my daughters this would be fine.

Nothing is mentioned again until I go to a home birth class run by the NHS. I didnt learn anything new just when to get in touch with the hospital so they could send the midwives out. I was also told that I must keep an open mind because if the deliverey suite was under staffed I would have to go into hospital.

At 36 weeks of my pregnancy the hospital delivered a home birth kit and a canister of gas & air to my home, this is when I felt it was really gonna happen and that I was going to have the birth I really wanted.

At 39 weeks I went into labour. I left it as long as I could bear before needing some G&A. The midwives came out at 8.45pm and they were amazing! I cannot praise them enough.

They encouraged me to move around and get in a position I was most comfortable with to give birth in. This turned out to be my downstairs toilet!

My son was born at 11.55pm. After the midwives had finished their checks on me and the placenta was delivered they took me upstairs to have a shower.

While I was there they cleaned the whole of my downstairs. When I came down it was spotless, no sign of a birth taking place an hour previously!

I cannot recommend a home birth enough, im not knocking hospital births, but for me a home brith was definately the right choice for me and my family.
