Advantages: you feel safer in case something goes wrong
Disadvantages: you can come across snotty midwifes
When I was expecting my first child. I never even thought about having a "homebirth" I wanted my child to be born in the hospital in case things went wrong. I had heard the horror stories about babies being born in hospital and mums catching the super bug MRSA but I still wanted my daughter to be born in hospital. I did in fact have an awful experience.
I went into labour and was rushed into hospital to be told that I wasn't in labour and to go home. I wasn't even checked. I was told by a snotty nosed midwife that she could tell I wasn't in much pain so I couldn't possibly be in labour. I went back home tail in between my legs feeling guilty for wasting their time. As this was my first child I really didn't know what to expect so I went home and tried to relax only to be back at the hospital an hour later and giving birth to my daughter 10 mins after that. I was horrified as anything could have happened. I made a complaint but nothing was ever done.
I decided to give the hospital the benefit of the doubt and have my second daughter in hospital. This was a totally different experience (even though there were a few complications) and I had a lovely midwife that couldn't do enough for me. I was treated like a queen and so glad that I chose a hospital birth.
I think I made the right choices regarding having my children in hospital. I always thought if something happened and my child wasn't able to get to the hospital in time I would never have forgiven myself. In fact my second daughter was born not breathing and had to be rushed away for oxygen. I know that you are kitted out with everything , I would still feel unsafe.
I suppose its how you feel really but a hospital birth was defiantly the right choice for me as it gave me peace of mind and also a bit of rest after my baby was born, especially the second time round as I already had a 2 year old at home. It was also nice to have time to myself and be with other new mums to swap tips and talk about our newborns because as soon as you reach home you will be bombarded with visitors and wont get a minute yourself.
Summary: i would recommend

- 16/10/08 I gave birth to my little boy at Home in June and it was the best experience I had.
Even though I had to have an Episiotomy and ended up having a 3rd degree tear (didn't expect to have a 8lb 2oz baby!) and had to spend the night in hospital as I had to have stitches, to me the hospital didn't feel as relaxing as home and I would chose a Homebirth again xx |
