Advantages: Hospital is a lot safer

Disadvantages: Home could be risky

I woulld have thought it was a bit of a no bariner when it comes to deciding whether to have your child in hopital or at home after all where would you rather be, safe in a fully equipped hospital with all those medical experts and resouces spread around you or stuck at home with hopefully a midwife surounded by your personal posessions none of which would be much cop in a medical emergency if any complications with the birth arose.

In the last five months or so six of my close friends have become mothers, all for the first time and five of those all had good birthing experiences in hospitals, only one had a negative experience and that was in a London hospital where they seemed to be rushed off their feet, two of my friends had some complications yet these were dealt with using a minimum of fuss, if they had been giving birth at home then there could have been quite serious complications indeed.

In hospital you have a wide variety of pain relief available something that would be very beneficial indeed especially for a first birth when the whole experience is new and you are faced with lots of uncertainty and fears.

For me it would always be the hospital option every time.

Summary: Hospital or home.
