Advantages: Advantages in both choices
Disadvantages: Disadvantages in both
I've given this a 5 star as I think it's very important for women to be able to choose whether they would like to give birth at home or in a hospital depending on what feels right for them. However I do feel that there has to be exceptions on this! But I will dwelve into this further down....
HOSPITAL BIRTH ADVANTAGES
1. First of all there will always be a nurse, doctor or consultant available straight away if something goes wrong. Giving birth, obviously, is not always a straight forward thing. Complications can occur and occasionally, turn into emergencies. If you are at the hospital they will be able to give you and your baby the assistance you need ASAP!!
2. I know, when I fell pregnant with my eldest son, I researched into everything about childbirth and I felt (being naive) that I was completely prepared. BUt nothing could prepare me for the pain that is labour. And thank goodness, there were options out there for people like me, who felt like the pain was waaaay too much. That I feel is a great advantage to giving irth in a hospital!
3. Going into labour, usually, is'nt planned. So for all you know, it could start at 1am and literally last hours on end. When you eventually give birth and you have that out of body experience that sends you on a high for a while afterwards... you eventually desperately need sleep. It feels like you have just completed a marathon, well in fact, you have just completed a tremendously wonderful marathon. And all the time you're in hospital, there are people to help you if you feel that you just need a little nap.
4. If this is your first pregnancy then any bit of advice with a newborn.... especially from a nurse, is wonderful. As you will always worry about whether you're doing the right things. So a nurse telling you that everything is ok, can be worth a million.
HOME BIRTH ADVANTAGES
1. Giving birth is nothing like anything else in the world. For some, it can be very terrifying, especially if you're not keen on hospitals. There is however, the choice to give birth in your very own home. The atmosphere can be however you would like it to be. It is entirely up to you whether you would like some candles on or an all time favourite film in the backround.... whatever relaxes you. And as you'll be in your own home, your own surroundings, could make the whole prospect of giving birth, seem much easier.
2. If you're like some women, who would like the whole family round for some comfort and support, a home birth is essentail. You have that say in however many people you would like to be with you. Whereas in a hospital, you are limited to two. Who knows, some people like to have a family game of monopoly in between contractions.
3. For some, your own bed is what you desire after birth, obviously that's not possible at the hospital.. so again a great advantage of being at home.
4. If you're very keen (and you may be adamant) on giving birth as natural as possible... then your own home will help you to achieve this. There's no temptation in powerful pain relievers.... You do have the option of gas and air (which is some absolutely amazing stuff, honestly) but it only distracts you from the pain, it doesn't take it away. And obviously, labouring in your own home is a very natural thing in my opinion.
There are many other benefits to either a home or hopital birth depending on your indivual needs and wants. And really, unless you are high risk, it is totally up to you. I personally, had no choice with my children as my first son was born 6 weeks early and because of this, was slightly higher risk for my second son (wich thankfully, he was born on time). But given the choice, it would be hospital birth for me.... just my preference really. :-)
Summary: Giving birth is a wonderful experience and dont foget you have the choice as to where!!

- 10/07/09 I had my first in hospital and hated it. My second was at home and totally wonderful. |

- 10/07/09 Sadly, due to my wife's 4th degree tear with our firstborn, home birth is not an option for us - otherwise we would have loved to have had our second this way. Friends of ours have had all three of theirs at home with no complications. Some good advice, nicely presented and written up. 8^) |
