Advantages: Once it has worked you are ok for ages

Disadvantages: Expensive if you have a long term problem

I have suffered and have been diagnosed with IBS-D for about eighteen months and in this time have tried every anti-diarrhoea tablet I have come across- from many supermarkets own brands to other brand names. On every single packet it says the same under ingredients- 2mg loperamide hydrochloride-so why Imodium always works the best I cannot answer- but it does. I don't want this to be the case as the price in my local supermarket is 96p for their own brand, whereas the Imodium is £3.95. But when you have diarrhoea it isn't about price it's about what works. The pack contains 8 tablets and the initial adult dose is 2 tablets and a further tablet after each "episode"to a maximum of 8 capsules in 24 hours. As I have taken 6 on some occasions- you will see why it can get expensive- but as I say if it works you don't mind- you can't mind. Don't misunderstand this- I am not talking 6 tablets because of the quality of Imodium, but because of the severity of my problem on a given day.

If your diarrhoea is caused by lactose intolerance please check the label as some Imodium contains lactose.

Imodium can be used in the treatment of IBS- there are other brands which advise against this- so take care.

Also it is imperative that if you have anything other than short lived diarrhoea- i.e lasting longer than 24 hours- you should make an appointment to see your GP.

Imodium is not recommended for children under the age of 12 years old.
