**Have you ever felt that the world is dropping out of your bottom? (Isn't that the other way around?) **Ever been caught with the clenched buttock syndrome in public? **Has the ominous rumble of your stomach ever signalled a Vesuvius type eruption, and you've been helpless to do anything other than sit and groan on the loo for what seems like hours, only to find when you think it's all over, it starts again? **Has the lethal combination of a nights drinking, and an obscure burger van kebab resulted in a next day holiday on the toilet? **Or did you simply make the unfortunate mistake of believing that you was going to be the only one not struck down by that bug doing the rounds? If you can apply any of the above, then Imodium should be a familiar name to you. If this is not so, read on and discover a friend for life. Recently, something did the rounds of the college where the other half is completing his training, and the result was a combination of the above descriptions. This was fine while he was at home the previous afternoon, but when the next morning arrived and the trots were still present, it dawned on us that extra measures had to be taken. A nice long train trip every morning, is guaranteed to be a real problem if your bum is in overdrive. Sitting an exam? maybe not A trip to the chemist was involved and I came back with a new version of Imodium. ***What have I got? A box of twelve Imodium Instant melts. These set me back £6.50 in my high street chemist. The box is white and pale blue with a thin orange line going across the middle. On the front is stated that this is a new Imodium, that they are instant melts, the amount contained by the box and they reassuringly say that they can stop diarrhoea with one dose. Here it is also stated that the generic ingredient is Loperamide hydrochloride. Johnson and Johnson produce Imodium Instant melts. On the reverse of the box you will
find genera l instructions on the recommended dosage, a brief warning to not take more than the stated dose and the address for the manufacturers. Once opened, the box contains two foil blister strips of six instant melts each, and the patient information leaflet. This in itself is a mini manual, but at a closer look is very simple to follow. ***What should you know about Imodium Instant melts? Here you are advised to read the leaflet carefully and if in any doubt to consult either the doctor or the pharmacist who will have further details. A warning to not throw it away as you made need it again is also issued. (okaay?) ***What are Imodium Instant melts? The active ingredient of Imodium Instant melts is loperamide hydrochloride, a medicine used to treat diarrhoea. Each tablet contains 2mg of this ingredient. Imodium Instant melts come in the form of white orodispersable (fast dissolving for the slower of us). ***What are they used for? You still don't know? Hmmm. They are used to treat sudden short-lived (acute) bouts of diarrhoea in adults and children over twelve years of age. Apparently they can also be used to treat episodes of diarrhoea associated with Irritable bowel syndrome. ***What should you know before taking Imodium Instant melts? If you are pregnant or trying to become so, tell your pharmacist or your doctor first. This same rule applies if you are breastfeeding as small amounts of Imodium may get into your milk. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines. The patient information leaflet goes on to recite a whole spectrum of do's and don'ts amongst them the obvious one of if you are constipated do not use etc, etc. I think that if I was to try and put all this onto paper the end result would be basically copying the whole leaflet, and I am not about to do that! Simply follow common sense and the
leaflet guidelines that are clear enough and if in any doubt whatsoever, ask the pharmacist or your doctor as to what you may or not do. Obviously, as in any case of diarrhoea, your body loses large quantities of fluids and salts. Therefore it is advisable to replace these by taking more liquids than you normally would. In an extreme case the pharmacist may recommend powders that contain sugar and salts (oral rehydration therapy) to help. Now all this has been established, (you read fast or the carpet is ruined) you should be ready to go ahead and find relief. ***How many, when, and how often? *Peel back the lid from the pocket, and tip onto the hand. *Do not press tablet out of pocket as this is a wafer like tablet and it will damage, if not destroy the tablet. *Place correct number of tablets on tongue. These dissolve very quickly so you won?t need water to swallow them with. *Do not chew either. Adults and children aged 12 and over: take 2 tablets to begin with, if required 1 tablet after each episode of diarrhoea. Don?t take more than 8 in a 24-hour period. Go to your doctor if you still have diarrhoea after this time. You can also take Imodium for irritable bowel syndrome, taking 2 tablets to control an episode. From there taking 1 to 2 each episode Again the maximum is 8 tablets in a 24-hour period. If you take too many Imodium instant melts contact your doctor or hospital without delay. ***Side effects? It is possible to have a reaction to loperamide, (over sensitivity). This is rare, but signalled for instance by: skin rash, itching, and shortness of breath or swollen face. See your doctor if any of these signs occur. Severe bloating or stoppage of bowel has been reported, if this should occur, again contact your doctor and stop taking Imodium. Other unwanted side effects could be: tummy cramps, feeling sick, vomiting, tiredness, drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth a
nd skin reactions including nettle rash. Urinary retention has been reported rarely. ***Summary: Mentioned all these points, I shall say that Imodium Instant melts were very effective indeed and solved the problem almost immediately. Definitely a product I would recommend to anyone with an explosive backside! They are a must in our cabinet, (until they run out and I forget to get a new box every now and again.) Imodium is available in various formats of quantity and type, simply ask for information at your local chemist or your doctor.
