Advantages: Freshens breath, feel like it is doing some good.

Disadvantages: Very, very strong.

I had never used a mouthwash until recently. My youngest son is 13, nearly 14 and has discovered girls (and now his troubles start). So decided on our last shopping trip that he wanted some mouthwash.

Remembering that my dentist had suggested it to me also, as a compliment brushing teeth (which I always do too hard apparently), I went ahead and bought the Listerine.

Bottle is clear plastic with a childproof black cap, plain front label showing the name of the product and a picture of some teeth and gums before and after Listerine use, 56% plaque reduction apparently, though no link to the evidence source, a big negative for anyone like me who has done significant academic research, lol. Although, being pedantic, I have checked the website and there are links to the clinical research though one has to register first, I didn't, I do not want more spam in my inbox.

The product claims not only to reduce plaque, but also to freshen breath and 'kill bacteria between teeth'.

Look, smell and taste:
Bright green in colour pretty much the consitency of water, oops, sorry, 'Aqua' which most of it is. On opening te lid the smell is actually quite pleasant in a masochistic sort of way as it reminds me a bit of the mouthwash ones gets at the dentist. As for taste; it is like a bloomin' freight train has gone off in your mouth, subtle it aint. Very, very strong, almost burning sensation, which somehow has the effect (on me) of making me feel like it must be working. It certainly felt like it would kill any bacteria. Basically, all you do is get some in the mouth and swill it round for 30 seconds, any longer and I reckon you would have no skin left.

Does it work?
In terms of breath freshness, definitely. I find that my breath feels fresh for a good few hours after use. In terms of plaque reduction, I have only been using this a couple of weeks but I do feel like it is helping, have to wait and see on that one.

Finally:
Whether it works or not as stated I am not sure. It does give a feeling of freshness to the mouth and breath. Not to be used my children under 12, not to be used by many folk who would just find it too strong. At around the £4 mark, a 500ml bottle will keep a family of four going for a couple of weeks, so quite cost effective. I like it and will keep using it.

Summary: Listerine mouthwash seems like a good idea.
