What is it supposed to do:
Prevent and reduce plaque;
kill bacteria between teeth;
Freshen breath
I don't doubt the claims from Pfizer for Listerine antibacterial mouthwash, but for me the smell and taste are too much and outweigh the benefits.
When you open the cap there is a very strong not quite minty smell. It is more like disinfectant than medicated menthol. Once you get past the awful smell there is worse to come with the horrible taste. The taste is extremely difficult to describe but it is awful, a strange mint taste like some strange alcoholic drink. It almost feels like it is burning the inside of your mouth, for me I can't wait for the required 30 seconds to spit it out. It also leaves quite a long lasting aftertaste, not very pleasant. When I was a child my mother used to tell me that the worse the medicine tasted the better it was for you. If this principle is applied to Listerine it must be the best on the market for oral hygiene.
Listerine does have loads of testimonials from dental associations but I prefer other brands of mouthwash. I have bought the purple version and I am hoping this will smell and taste better, but as yet I haven't tried it.
Listerine is made by Pfizer, it contains Aqua, Alcohol, Benzoic Acid, Poloxamer 407, Eucalyptol, Methyl salicylate, Thymol, Menthol, Sodium benzoate, Caramel. More information on Listerine can be found at:

Currently priced at £2.45 for 500ml in Boots. I usually buy when it is on offer.
I would recommend Listerine original for what it does but be warned about the smell and taste.
Summary: Not for me I find it overpowering
