Advantages: It's simple to follow, tasty and it works!

Disadvantages: Some of the Slim Fast brand products are expensive...

A classic diet plan! Nowadays the Slim Fast diet plan centres around the following model:

Breakfast- Slim Fast Shake, Slim Fast Smoothie or Slim Fast Meal Bar
Morning Snack- Fruit, Veg or Slim Fast Snack Bar
Lunch- Slim Fast Shake, Slim Fast Meal Bar or Slim Fast Soup
Afternoon snack- Fruit, Veg or Slim Fast Snack
Dinner- Prepare your own meal of 600 calories
Evening- Slim Fast Snack

Take note of the amount of times I've written the brand name Slim Fast! As you can see you are intended to consume an awful lot of their products!!!

This diet plan does, however, work. Its a simple calorie controlled diet. Providing you stick to the plan and do some exercise you are pretty much guarenteed to lose some weight.

Slim fast Shake powders can be bought for around £6. Each tin contains 12 servings. That's 50p per meal (plus the cost of some skimmed milk) which works out cheaper than stuffing your face quite frankly! If you are going to commit to the diet I would strongly suggest buying a couple of tins of different flavours. The same flavour for breakfast and lunch every day for a week is boring, depressing and highly likely to de-motivate you. On the bright side the shakes are lovely and creamy when mixed well. A blender will help... I'm a banana girl myself :)

A word of advice about their soups and snacks...

Take a look at the Nutritional information and then look at normal versions of the items in the supermarket. You will most likey find a tinned soup that a) has the same nutritional value as a Slim Fast Soup b) tastes nicer and c) costs a fraction. Same goes for their snacks. A small Kit Kat only has about 7 more Calories than one of their chocolate snack bars and they are far far cheaper.

I did not stick to a rigid Slim Fast diet. I used it as a model and substituted some of the products for cheaper and equally effective products. I did lose a lot of weight. My BMI in January of this year was just a fraction off being Obese. I stuck to my diet, I exercised and by May I had a healthy BMI of around 25. I am now my 'ideal weight' and I am extremely proud of what I achieved with hard work and Slim Fast milkshakes coming out of my ears!!!

Summary: An easy diet to stick to. If I can do it, you can do it :)

Hi! Yes, I went off the Slim Fast in April and my weight has stayed the same. But granted, I still exercise as much and I don't eat junk... much :P I think it really is all about balance. I still have the odd takeaway with the fella but in general my diet is very healthy.

I think the diet helped me appreciate what im putting into myself a bit more, instead of just mindlessly binging. Plus, with Slim Fast you are still consuming a sensible amoung of calories everyday. There are more extreme 500 calorie per day shake diets out there. My mother was on one for 6 months. She lost around 7 stone but her hair went thin and the weight rebounded badly.

The one thing that worries me about these type of diet plans (actually, there are a couple of things, but this is the biggie) is what happens when you lose the weight and go back to eating 'normal' food - have you done that yet?

You make some very good points about some of the foods on the plan and their cost and calorie content - the other thing, I suspect, about the plan is that you eat less because you get bored of the same old things!

As you point out, any calorie controlled diet will work if you stick to it - I calorie counted but ate 'normal' foods, which is harder work to begin with, but easier, I suspect to maintain in the long term.
