Advantages: IT WORKS!!! Handy size, fits in your handbag.

Disadvantages: Take the battery out while in your handbag otherwise it keeps getting switched on and bleeping

I have suffered from coldsores all my life. In the past I would get one and that would enevitibly lead to another one or two. I once went to the Isles of Scilly and ended up with three on my top lip and two on the bottom one - all at the same time... OUCH!!!

I've been plagued by coldsores and often, most months, I'd get one or two of them. As time went by this did ease off and I'd probably get one every other month or so and as anyone who gets coldsores knows, you start with that painfull itchy patch that just keeps swelling up and getting more and more painful.

Some advertisers would claim that if you applied their oiltment/cream as soon as you felt the itch, you'd probably be able to stop the cold sore in it's tracks. Unfortunately, all too often, my coldsore would be fully formed by the time I woke up in the morning and it was too late to apply. Having said that I'd try anyway and I'm sure some of these products eased they symptoms, but didn't really help very much.

Once a cold sore is fully formed it's extremely painful and then, once the blisters have turned into a scab, it splits and bleeds or gets wet when you eat and drink. It's very unsightly.

Having a coldsore is an absolute misery and for two to three weeks (that's how long it used to take for mine to completely go) it's bloody painful, ugly, soggy and bleedy! YUK!!!

A couple of years ago a friend of mine's husband bought a cold sore machine from Virulite and she said she'd let me know how he got on with it.

It took a while for him to be able to use it because he didn't get a coldsore for ages but the result came back to me that it worked. I went straight to www.vcs.eu.com and bought one for about £40 and went about waiting for my next coldsore to arrive.

The coldsore machine is a very simple device which emits a 1072NWB light which the makers say helps to enhance the immune system. The machine is placed over the coldsore, you switch it on and it beeps. Wait for it to automatically stop and it will beep again on finishing. It takes about 3 minutes. The light is invisible and the only way you know the machine is on is because it has a little flashing green light when it's in operation.

The machine works best if you use it as soon as you feel the itch. They recommend you use it a couple of times a day for a few days and the coldsore should not appear.

I use the machine as soon as I feel anything and occasionally it has stopped the cold sore from appearing - as I mentioned earlier, mine often develop through the night and the blisters are there in the morning so it's too late to stop it. Even though it's too late to stop, I keep using the machine because it really helps.

Since using this machine I have noticed that I now get coldsores maybe only 2 or 3 times a year. Although I still get large coldsores, I find that using the machine helps reduce the pain considerably. I'm happy to say that it reduces pain by a good 80% and I'm not exaggerating on that. I also find that the coldsore scabs much more quickly and the scab rarely splits and bleeds. Previously it would split and bleed several times a day, now I can maybe go a couple of days without it splitting and bleeding.

As far as the soggy scab thing goes (sorry, it sounds horrible) the machine seems to help it dry out quicker so the scab stays in place and doesn't come off so often. But if it does come off it still helps with the pain. In the past, a scab coming off used to really hurt like hell, but this machine really, really takes most of the pain out of the whole thing.

Overall the coldsores are not anywhere near as painful as those I suffered from in the past. Although still unsightly, they heal so much quicker than before and altogether the experience is less painful and shorter lived.

I told my boss about this and she swears by it too now.

I carry this in my handbag now, so that I'm always ready!

I think you can now get these on prescription from the Doctor, but I believe you'd need to check with your own doctor about this.

Summary: It's a fantastic product and I trust it and the company that makes it

Boots produce their own version of this for about £35 and I'm seriously considering getting one! Thanks for a useful review x

This is a good review, though I find it hard to believe that a light pen can cure cold sores - do you know if there have been any independent controlled studies to support this (not your problem, I know - you're just happy it works for you - but other folk might be interested)

Ch eers!
