Hayfever
Hayfever is basically a reaction that some individuals get to pollen in the air. There are different types of pollen but in general it is grass pollen that causes the problems.
Hayfever can be very mild and cause symptoms similar to a cold or can be more severe leaving people feeling miserable and quite unwell.
Some typical symptoms are-
Running Nose,
Sneezing,
Eyes watering,
Can agrivate athsma,
Itchy eyes,
Back of the throat being itchy,
Head pounding
The main remedy for hayfever is antihistamines that are available form the chemist or on prescription from the doctor. Antihistamines are small tablets taken orally that aim to relieve the symptoms (also used to treat other allergies). Some antihistamines can make you drowsy so if you drive etc. you must select your tablets carefully. They are also available for children in the form of a liquid (piriton) although children genrally do not suffer.
Available also is a nasal spray, which is a small bottle of liquid that you squirt up your nose. It is not very pleasnt but can be very effective.
Eye drops are also available that can help to releive redness and itching caused by hayfever.
A long time ago severe hayfever sufferers were given and injection to stop the symptoms, this was withdrawn due to some very serious reacation that people had to them. I have read recently ( approx. 1 year ago) that there is reasearch being done to try and re-introduce a safer injection.
I find hayfever to be a very erratic thing. I suffer very severely some years and yet other years I barely sniff at all.
My personal favourites for hayfever releif are-
Always wear sunglasses when badly affected (works for me)
Zirtec antihistamines- cost a couple of pounds from chemist
Beconase Nasal Spray- costs around five pounds from chemist.
I have noticed this year that Tesco has their own brand of antihistamine costing just 49p for a seven day supply. Sounds like really good value for money
Summary: Hayfever Sucks
