Advantages: None
Disadvantages: annoying and pointless
I've heard and seen lots about hayfever and all of the usual adverts for tablets and drops that you get this time of year, but I've never suffered from it, and neither have my children.
When my daughter complained to me that her eyes kept watering really badly, I kept my eye on her for a while before calling a doctor. She would put her make-up on and within half an hour, her eyes would stream and she'd keep wiping them. Initially, I thought it was because of our puppy because she's a bit intolerant to animal fur but she went away for a week and it was the same there. Then I thought it could be her make-up, maybe she had sensitive eyes, but when she wore no make-up or different brands, her eyes, would again stream.
Feeling worried now and with an annoyed teenager, I decided to call the doctor for an appointment, but they're useless there, and you have to call at 8:30am and wait to try and get an appointment. If you call about 9.30, all the appointments are gone and you can't book one, you have to call the next day. After trying for two days, I gave up and decided to have a word with the pharmacist in ASDA.
I explained her symptoms and what was happening and she smiled and said 'it must be hayfever'. I disagreed at first and told her that my daughter had never had it and she said you can get hayfever at any age, it can just come on. I was suprised to learn this, I thought you either had it or you didn't from birth. Also, you can have one or two symptoms, you don't have to have all of them, like sneezing or watery eyes which I also didn't know. I assumed hayfever meant your eyes streamed, you sneezed and your eyes puffed up.
She gave my daughter some eye drops, they don't have a brand on them, they're just called hayfever eye drops. My daughter has to use them three times a day and since she started to use them, even in the heat, her eyes haven't watered once. She's happy now she can wear her make-up again.
My daughters eyes can itch a little bit, so she has two little ice packs that she normally uses for her kicboxing tournaments incase of an injury, but she often puts these, or two freezing cold table spoons on her eyes to sooth this.
Hayfever is a pain and it is extra hassle that you don't want in the summer. My daughter was really annoyed that her eyes were watering, although she's been lucky so far as that is the only symptom she had. I think this is something else that belongs in room 101!
Summary: A pain in the bum to have, but it is unavoidable.
