Advantages: None!

Disadvantages: Painful at times, at best irritating

Ingrown hairs have been the bain of my life for the past 10 years, I only have myself to blame though. in 1999 I visited the Canary Islands with a "friend" from work for a fortnights break, her Dad owned an apartment out there so we only had to pay for flights and spending money. I was desperate for a holiday that year so rather stupidly agreed to accompany her.

The holiday itself started off well but after a few days we started to annoy each other and things went rather pear shaped... 3 days before we were due to come home my friend insisted we spend a day at the other end of the Island. I was forced to sit on the beach all morning feeling anxious as I was prone to catching the sun rather too well.

That evening I started to feel sick and clammy and desperate to get in the pool, I had heat stroke from sitting outdoors for too long. I was furious but had no idea of what was to come...

The next morning I woke up and almost screamed the apartment block down when I saw my legs, both of them from just above the knee down were bright red and swollen. I had trouble standing up straight as the skin was so tight plus to make matters worse the skin was starting to blister, little tiny bubbles that were slowly growing bigger.

I had to see a doctor and get my legs treated and bandaged up, I looked a state on the plane home with wrapped up legs sticking out of my shorts. Needless to say things soured badly with my friend and we havent spoken since, but that's another story.

I was told by my doctor back home that I had suffered severe sun burn and would have to use various creams and potions to help the skin heal. I was like a snake shedding it's skin for a few weeks and the blisters took a long time to dry up, I was gutted and scared about skin cancer.

Because the skin on my legs was damaged so much and is now slightly wrinkly and looser than it should be I suffer terribly with ingrown hairs. I have to scrub them in the shower every day and moisturise to prevent the skin drying out and making things worse. I have only a small patch on my left ankle that is smooth, the rest of my legs feel bumpy to the touch and often appear red and inflamed.

Hair removal is a difficult process for me, removing the actual hair is fine, it's when it starts to grow back I have trouble. I can shave as that can cause spots and infections and I hate creams due to the chemically smells. I did try sugaring in a local salon but the effects didnt last long and it was expensive. I've resorted to using a combination of home waxing, epilation and tweezers.

Having bumpy, ugly legs gets me down at times and I often dread the summer as I long to wear skirts and shorts but daren't as I don't want my legs on show. I have tried many so called solutions to ingrown hairs with little success, Nads products from Australia seem to be having a positive effect at the moment but I'll have to wait and if see if the effects are long lasting.

I'm lucky that I have a loving partner who loves me for who I am and not what I look like. He helps to boost my confidence and assures me my legs arent as I bad as I fear. I still cant help feeling bad about them though and rather unfeminine.

The result of this is that I now cant sunbathe anymore but thats no bad thing as I do tend to overheat easily. I would say to anyone please think twice before going out in the sun and look after your skin, otherwise you could end up suffering like me.

Summary: Look after your skin to avoid them

Have you thought of laser hair removal? Also, Vaseline Derma Care Lotion is very good for hyper-sensitive skin. I keep meaning to review it! x

I've had sunburn but nowhere near as bad as you and count myself very lucky. Great review and good warning for would-be sun worshippers out there. :-)
