It is pretty hard these days to not turn on the television and find some programme highlighting the dangers of obesity amongst the population, you have Jamie Oliver trying to do something about school dinners (although he seems to have been eating a few turkey twizzlers himself lately), fat camp, The Biggest Loser and a host of other shows on a similar theme.

The old adage, you are what you eat certainly seems to ring true and we seem to have become a nation of junk food freaks and lovers of convenience food which is high in salt, fat and sugar. It was after watching the US made movie Supersize me that I vowed never to darken the doors of McDonalds or any of the other burger style fast food outlets and I'm pleased to say that ignoring a couple of visits to the local chippie once every couple of months I have been very successful at sticking to my promise. If you have not seen the film then I suggest you give it a viewing and it might have the same effect on you.

What we eat is one of the reasons for the rise in obesity and surely the other is the fact that we all take a lot less exercise these days. It starts even before kids get into the classroom with shows like Teletubbies and Balllamorie providing a virtual babysitter for parents to istract kids and keep them quiet while they get on with prpearing the processed meal. When children finally get to school a compressed timetable means that there is less and less opportunity to do PE.

It does not get a lot better once the kids get home as it is straight n front of the TV or the video game to exercise the fingers and not a lot else.

The bring problem with this lack of exercise and poor diet is that we are storing up a whole host of medical problems down the line and it is horrifying to read about the growth child diabetes and even kids with heart problems due entirely to being over weight.

I just hope that when it is my time to start a famly I do not fall into the same traps that other parents seem to have allowed themsleves to.

Summary: Commentary on obesity.

There was a new study just out.
Parents dont let their kids out as much, so they cant play (exercise) as much so get fat.
Kids are taken to and from school, and kept an eye on a lot more than they were years ago, which leads to their parents keeping them inside more, as the parents are too scared of their kids getting snatched thanks to the media.
Reporting has increased, while in reality the crimes are occuring at the same rate/lower, which gives a view that there are more kid snatchings etc than there used to be.

Supersize me aint a good example though, he ate bad, but he also ate far too much.
One of the first scenes is him trying to force feed himself a supersize mcd's meal (which in the US are huuuge) he couldnt eat it all but forced himself so made himself sick. Do that for a full month and it dont take a brain surgeon to tell you what happens.
