Supraventricular Tachycardia (SVT)

Newest Review: ... from the SA node (Sino atrial node) located in the right atrium(there are 2 atria / chambers) reaches the AV node (atrio ventricular node) which then passes onto the Bundle of HIS and subsequently to the Purkinje fibres. SA node-----AV node------Bundle of HIS-----Purkinje fibres In an SVT an abnormal extra pathway is created from the AV node through to the ventricle. This conduction is continued unabated till it stops on it's own or a medical intervention is carried out. This overrides the normal conduction pathway. The signs and symptoms of SVT is a very rapid pulse rate at around 150-200 beats per minute.Palpitations(awareness of one... more

Supra means above, ventricular implies the (2) ventricular chamers in the heart, and tachycardia is the increased heart rate/pulse rate more than 100/minute. It is an abnormal impulse conduction arising above the ventricles and rate of the impulses is usually above 150/minute. The normal pathway is for the impulse to arise from the SA node (Sino atrial node) located in the right atrium(there are 2 atria / chambers) reaches the AV node (atrio ventricular node) which then passes onto the Bundle of HIS and subsequently to the Purkinje fibres.
