Mars Tunes Blackcurrant Sugar Free Throat Lozenges
by headsore I have been buying of late a couple of boxes of Mars Tunes and the particular flavour I like are their blackcurrant flavour. I get these for 49p from my Tesco Extra store. The box is relatively small, at 37g. I like the packaging of these menthol lozenges, as they are not like the Tunes of old and in a packet and square shaped. These ... are in a cardboard box with a little lid that flips up and over. The only comparison I can make is the small boxes of Poppets that my little lad loves to eat on a regular basis. I like to eat these, (or suck on these) if and when my throat is sore, as it has been lately. I talk quite a bit at work and I am on the phone a lot and my throat can get dry and sore and this is when I find these little sweets helps me a lot. They are not square shaped, as I say, like the traditional Tune - they are an oval in shape with a small dent in the centre. They are deep purple in colour and the idea is to suck gently until the whole lozenge has melted away in your mouth. I inevitably chew before I get to the end (much like a do a Rowntree's Fruit Pastille) but if I do manage to suck right down, I am rewarded with the gooey interior, which gives me a pure blackcurrant hit right at the back of the throat. This is what soothes my soreness mostly and it is very soothing indeed and makes my throat feel a whole lot better. I am sure these lozenges have not been about for too long, unless I have just not spotted them in the shops. They work really well and I also like the fact that the menthol taste in them is not too strong, either, as some throat lozenges can be. I suck these on and off all day long if my throat is particular bad. They are sugar free so for me this is great as I am still trying to lose weight. Overall, I have nothing really negative to say about these great little lozenges. They do a grand job, there are plenty in the box and they are a good price to boot. Great stuff. Mars Tunes Blackcurrant Sugar Free Throat Lozenges
by WackoStepho When I've come down with a cough, cold or flu, invariably a sore throat accompanies it and in those desperate times of need I reach for a box of tunes and turn to them to offer me some form of slight relief. I can cope with runny noses, fevers, the lot but I find sore throats to be one of the most painful ailments ever, when your tonsils ... swell up and the whole of your throat feels like it's on fire, not the happiest of times I'm sure you can agree. When I'm suffering like that you'll usually find me lying on the sofa feeling sorry for myself, with a box of tissues on hand and a range of lozenges and various other remedies on standby. I'm picky when it comes to flavours and tend to opt away from cough and cold medicines as they usually taste vile, tunes on the other hand are considerably more tasty and I find I can suck away on one with no complaints. I've seen cherry tunes but the variety I will be reviewing here today is the blackcurrant and menthol version. The lozenges come in a little cardboard box with a sort of flip up lid, the box is bright purple with the tunes logo clearly displayed and a picture of the lozenges underneath. We are told that they are also sugar free so I imagine fine for people with diabetes. The actual lozenges themselves are oval in shape with a slight indent in the middle, they are deep purple and relatively small so won't overcrowd your mouth. As soon as you begin sucking on them you will be met with a deep fruity flavour that is slightly reminiscent of concentrated ribena, there is also a hit of menthol undertones but this isn't the most noticeable flavour and isn't overpowering in any way. The lozenges are best if you suck them but if you happen to give them a bit of a chew you'll discover a slightly gooey middle. They last quite a while of intense sucking, gradually getting smaller and smaller before disolving completely in your mouth. I do find that they soothe quite well as you're sucking them and this relief lasts for a while after the sweet is gone. I imagine the gooey middle helps to coat your throat and this is what causes the soothing sensation. Each box is 37g and will set you back around 46p at various tesco stores. Overall I would say that tunes work well in the short term but you may find yourself munching through a few boxes during the course of your cold. 4/5 stars. Read the complete review |

Mars Tunes Blackcurrant Sugar Free Throat Lozenges
by Wee_Jackie_163 I had a horrible cold at the start of the year which left me feeling pretty miserable and run-down. At the time, I bought several over-the-counter medicines in a bid to try and help some of my symptoms. One of the worst symptoms I was suffering from at the time was a very dry throat, which felt quite tickly and scratchy. I ... felt that it was quite uncomfortable to talk (so I tended not to - much to my husband's delight..!!) as a result of my throat being so dry. I thought that using some sort of lozenge or throat pastille might help to alleviate these symptoms and make my throat feel a little more comfortable. I actually bought two types of throat lozenge at the time, one of which was from the well-known range of "Tunes" lozenges. There was only one flavour option available to me at the time, which was blackcurrant. I paid around 70 pence for the small, 37g oblong-shaped package of Tunes from a local (independent) pharmacy store. I didn't count the lozenges but I would estimate there are around a dozen in the package, so I don't think the price is particularly excessive. I have also bought the blackcurrant Tunes (and a cherry-flavoured alternative) from my local grocery store in the past, as well as other drugstores and some supermarkets such as Sainsbury's and so I feel they are quite widely available. The lozenges are a dark purple colour and they look quite attractive. I can smell the blackcurrant flavouring from the lozenges quite easily as you would expect with a product aimed at clearing your blocked nose and helping your sore throat! The smell is very pleasant although I do think they smell quite sweet, and so felt slightly reassured that the Tunes Blackcurrant Lozenges are "Sugar Free" as I do worry about products like this having a detrimental effect on my dental health. I believe that the Tunes may cause a laxative effect if taken to excess, but I found that one lozenge every few hours was more than enough for me and wouldn't personally have been tempted to take any more than this anyway. I thought that the Tunes tasted very nice, and I do particularly enjoy blackcurrant flavoured sweets and drinks anyway so this was no surprise to me. I didn't find that they were overly sweet, nor were they sickly or bitter at all. The Blackcurrant Tunes contain menthol in their ingredients, which can have a positive effect if you are suffering from a heavy cold or a head cold. Menthol works well at combating the unpleasant 'stuffy' feeling in the nasal canals that I'm very familiar with as I suffer on and off with sinus problems. Using products containing menthol can help to alleviate the 'stuffy' feeling in the head and face that can be caused as a result of having sinus problems or a heavy cold, and I have found its use can be quite beneficial. To be honest, the worst of the symptoms I was experiencing at the time was in relation to my throat as I mentioned earlier, so I didn't particularly notice any huge difference to my nose/head/sinuses after using the Blackcurrant Tunes recently, as they weren't particularly affected by the cold I was suffering from at that time. I was aware of the presence of the menthol when I was sucking on one of the Tunes lozenges however, and found its cooling qualities felt very pleasant in my tender throat and blocked nasal passages. In terms of my tickly, dry throat, I found the Blackcurrant Tunes worked quite well with alleviating the dry feeling, but I didn't feel they offered any sort of benefit to the tickling or scratching feeling that I was experiencing at the time. I have came to the conclusion therefore, that the lozenges offered some sort of lubrication to my tender , dry throat but I felt that any benefit I had felt was extremely short-lived. For this reason, I abandoned using the Tunes after only a day, and sought out an alternative medication with a little more 'oomph' to help combat the unpleasant 'tickling' that I was suffering from. In conclusion, I would buy the Tunes again if I was suffering from a more minor cold-related ailment, such as a runny nose, or a dry throat. For any symptoms that are worse than this however, I find the lozenges are fairly ineffective and don't do enough to ward of my symptoms. In an emergency, or if nothing else was to hand, I would certainly use the Tunes and I did like the fact that they were sugar free as many other lozenges are not. Read the complete review |
