Agnus Castus is another name for the chaste tree, the berries of which have been used for thousands of years and are now used as a herbal medicine for many gynecological issues such as PMS, infertility due to lack of menstruation and hormonal acne. It is called the chaste tree because it has also been used to supress libido. It balances out female hormones as it acts on the pitutary gland to increase lutenising hormone and therefore increasing progesterone and so regulating the menstrual cycle.

There are many different brands that sell it and it can come in caplet form containing the dried fruit or liquid form. I use the liquid tincture (a tincture is the dried fruit extracted in alcohol) by A.Vogel which is destributed by bioforce, the website which contains many other tinctures is www.avogel.co.uk, it comes in a 50ml glass bottle, which lasts me around 6-8 weeks. Im afraid it doesnt say the concentration of the herb in the tincture though.

You just have 20 drops on your tongue twice a day (morning and before bed is when I have it). You can also put the 20 drops in water(makes the water green). It can come out of the bottle quite fast especially when it is full so sometimes hard to count it exactly so I just estimate the best i can. The taste is very strong and bitter and burns your mouth without the water as it contains 69% alcohol. I find its best to take it that way though especially if you dont like the taste because if you put it in water you have to drink the whole thing.

The tincture is available from most health food stores and im sure the price will vary but mine is 8.49. I wish it was cheaper. On the bottle it says not to be given to children under 14 years. Also it shouldnt be used when pregnant or breast feeding or when taking oestrogen and progesterone tablets.

Without getting too personal here I take it for some menstrual problems and to regulate my cycle and find that it works excellently although it did take a few months to work at first. Of course it it is not for everyone so you should speak to your doctor before taking it.
