Advantages: Widely available, a trusted family remedy, effective and pleasant to take

Disadvantages: Always follow instructions, see doctor if symptoms persist

Picture the scene. It’s Christmas afternoon and you are slumped in your armchair waiting for the Queen to come on. It’s been a great Christmas Day so far. Breakfast was at nine and the family tucked into a festive fry-up of bacon, sausage, kidney, mushrooms, black pudding slices, fried eggs (sunny side up), hash browns and fried bread followed by thickly buttered toast and marmalade. An hour later someone opened a box of choccies, so you had just a couple of soft centres…oh, and a couple of Turkish Delights, followed by a handful of salted peanuts. Of course, you couldn’t say no to a couple of those delicious marzipan fruits, could you, although you did only have one orange and lemon jelly slice, because you really aren’t that keen on them? Then just before lunch there was time for a couple of lagers and a glass of sherry with Auntie Maud.

Lunch was magnificent. Roast turkey ("I don’t want to take the skin off…I like the skin when it’s all brown and crispy!") roast potatoes, buttery mash, those sausage and bacon thingies, roast parsnips, a bit of crackling off the pork, sage and onion stuffing balls (three please!) and sprouts. Followed by Christmas pud with brandy butter, a mince pie, an after dinner mint, two chocolate brazils and a glass of Baileys!

"Ooh…I feel awful. I knew I shouldn’t have eaten that last sprout!"

Waves of nausea assail you and beads of sweat appear on your brow. Your tongue suddenly feels like you have been licking the carpet and inside your head the little drummer boy has started up his routine. You notice a burning pain in the middle of your chest and begin to panic…you try to get up, but your legs are heavy and you sink back into the chair. You become aware of a distant rumbling noise which is not the opening bars of “God Save The Queen.”

Don’t worry..you’re not dying. You’ve got indigestion
. You need….

ORIGINAL ANDREWS LIVER SALTS.

This tried and tested family remedy provides fast and effective relief from upset stomach, indigestion, dyspepsia, heartburn and the symptoms of over-indulgence. At a higher dose it is also effective in relieving constipation.

INGREDIENTS:

Andrews liver salts contain sodium bicarbonate, which is an antacid found in many stomach medicines. It is safe and effective and works by neutralising stomach acid. In the process, it releases carbon dioxide which is why you burp after taking it.

Andrews also contains citric acid, which is a natural, odourless and colourless crystalline substance which gives Andrews a pleasant, refreshing taste, not unlike weak lemonade. In fact, citric acid is also used in the production of lemonade, jams and some types of sweets.

Another ingredient is magnesium sulphate, which you may know better as Epsom Salts and which has a mild laxative effect.

And finally, Andrews liver salts contain sucrose Ph.Eur…in other words, just plain old sugar.

DOSAGE

For relief from digestive upsets take one level teaspoonful in a glass of water up to a maximum of four times a day. Drink while it is still fizzing. The taste is very pleasant.

To relieve constipation increase the dosage to two level teaspoonfuls in water either before breakfast or at bedtime.

For children over the age of three use half the adult dose. Andrews Liver Salts are not recommended for children under the age of three.

PRECAUTIONS

Andrews Liver Salts are effective and safe for most people. However, if you fall into any of the following categories please consult your Doctor or a Pharmacist before taking Andrews.

If you have long-term liver or kidney problems:
If you have heart problems:
If you have high blood pressure:
If you are on a low sodium diet:
If you have severe abdominal pain and/or severe
vomiting.

Andrews Original Liver Salts are made by Smithkline Beecham Consumer Healthcare, Brentford, TW8 9BD.

Andrews Original Liver Salts are available from most pharmacies and drug stores. The 150g size with its distinctive blue top and free measuring spoon costs about £2.69 (price checked at Boots Nov 2001)

Good Health!

It was quite amusing reading this! I used to drink this for pleasure when I was child. Maybe I should try it again now I eat and drink in adult style!
