Advantages: Wide Selection, Newest Technology Used, Do it while your shopping
Disadvantages: None
A couple of years ago we got a new big Asda built in a close town to me called Rawtenstall which was on 2 levels, it's huge!
Within that Asda they have an opticians I decided to start using because I was using a local branch that charged a lot for frames but more importantly they didn't have all the new equipment to test my eyes with that these bigger companies have, and it meant it I could go to opticians and also do my shopping at the same time.
I made an appointment while passing and this was a couple of years ago but managed to make an appointment for the next week.
The optician was very friendly and I feel my eyes were tested for a good amount of time. I didn't feel like I was being rushed or like just another person whose eyes he was testing.
They eye test at the time cost £15 and as I wear contact lenses as well I had to have a separate appointment for that, which they call a Consultation Appointment that cost about £15 as well.
With the consultation appointment they asked me lots of questions about lenses I have used in the past and done some more checks on my eyes, by squirting air in my eye this is to test the pressure. I told them I like daily lenses best and gave me a few pairs of Acuvue Moist free to try and said to come back in a couple of days to see how I was getting on with them.
I also at the time bought some glasses; I try and get a new pair every 2 years. I got a Jai Kudo frame which was £60 but the real cost for me is the lenses because of my prescription I need to get my lenses made thinner and I go for the price of £110 which isn't the top price but this is always the case with being so short sighted I have to pay a lot for them not to look like I am wearing big jars on my eyes!
I did find the frames were £20 cheaper then some smaller opticians but this is probably because Asda is such a big company they can undercut.
The lenses however were the same price as everywhere else I have been. I thought they would have worked out cheaper.
The eye test being £15 is about standard anywhere although the opticians I was using before was £20 for an eye test.
I feel like I got a better service from Asda opticians too.
A few months ago I went back to Asda Opticians and said I was having problems with my contact lenses, I got a different Optician this time but she was still very good and examined my eyes saying that my eyes had got slightly worse so gave me 5 pairs of a higher prescription of the same contact lenses I had been using for free and said if I had any problems to come back. I didn't pay for this either.
I tend to buy my contact lenses off the internet from a few different places including Asda Opticians online.
I will be going back to get my eyes tested again in a few months as I will be getting some new glasses.
If you have one close to you, check them out as they are very good and offer a great service.
My glasses came before I expected them too last time which was nice as I was about to pop with being pregnant.
They have a wide range of glasses to suit all types of people and also accept those NHS Vouchers.
Summary: Do it while you shop!
