Asda Vapour Rub
Advantages: Works wonderfully.
Disadvantages: Very pungent smell.
Asda Vapour Rub.
When we have colds in our house generally I reach out for olbas oil, the smell is very pleasant and it works wonderfully, but I do have a tub of this in the medicine cabinet, I think my mum bought it over when she heard my little one was poorly. Well I thought I'd give it a try.
The packaging is a small 50g tub about an inch and a half in height and is made of a very dark blue/green plastic with a teal plastic lid. The label is of the same colours and has in red written vapour rub. The tub is available in most if not all Asda store and at www.asda.co.uk and costs about £1. The rub itself is the consistency of petroleum jelly like all the other similarly named products on the market, this is not what I consider pleasant and it is oily and extremely unpleasant on the hands but at my mums insistence I rubbed a very small amount on my son's chest. I did find that it worked very well clearing my sons congestion and aiding his sleep but the aroma was extremely overpowering and pungent and not at all pleasant. It took ages for me to be able to get the smell out of my hands and you need to be conscience not to touch your eyes with it on your hands.
I was concerned my son would manage to get some on his hands whilst sleeping and then rub his eyes, so I ensured he was wearing something that would restrict him doing this. The product worked extremely well and my son slept very soundly with very little congestion, but the smell was too much for me.
I would use this again if I didn't have any olbas oil in the house, because there is no need to get olbas oil on your hands, less opportunity for getting it in your eyes and for me a more pleasant smell.
The ingredients are Petrolatum (Soft Paraffin), Camphor, Menthol, Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf Oil (Eucalyptus Oil), Thymus Vulgaris (Thyme Oil), and Juniperus Mexican Oil (Cedarwood Oil).

Overall I would not purchase this again unless it was urgent because although it worked wonderfully and definitely aided my son's congestion and made it easier for him to sleep the smell was too much, but this is a personal preference and you may feel differently about the smell. However for the price it is good value if you find the smell more appealing than I do.
Summary: A very effective product that is not really for my family.
