Asda Vapour Rub
Advantages: Nice strong smell, works well
My husband hates it but whenever I have a cold I immediately reach for the vapour rub. I've been using it for years and it always works well at unblocking my nose, especially at night when I am lying down. In the past I have used Vicks vapour rub but my sister in law turned me onto the Asda version last year and then when I needed to buy a new tub I stuck with Asda as this rub only costs £1 for a 50g tub, compared to a Vicks tub which costs in the £4 region.
A vapour rub is best described as a decongestant for easier breathing when suffering with colds and catarrh. It also helps to clear the sinuses which is what I have the most problems with. The vapour rub has a really strong eucalyptus smell which is what really works to unblock your nose. I find this stings if you get it close to your eyes or on any broken skin but in my opinion that just means its working, the stronger the better. Ingredients in this Asda rub include menthol and eucalyptus oil which is why the smell is so strong but its nice to know that it does have these natural ingredients in them to work on your cold.
The thing I like about a vapour rub is that its very easy to use and unlike medicine you can pretty much use as much as you want of it and I tend to reapply quite a few times during the day and night if my cold keeps me up. The vapour rub comes in a solid sort of wax form and another ingredient is petroleum so you can tell that this is what gives it its consistency. I apply the vapour rub all over my chest and also underneath my nose. I have t really done the vapour bath like some people recommend but I hear it is good. The smell does fade after a while and after you have applied it to your skin you do feel a bit greasy and a bit like you have something on but then when you have a cold you are never at your best anyway so I don't mind feeling all gross until I have a shower.
I also have quite a few problems with my sinuses on airplane flights and find that when I come to land my ears and nose block up and I feel like my head is going to split open. I take a little pot that I add some of the vapour rub to (I don't think with the liquid restrictions I would get the whole pot on the flight) and then smell it constantly whilst the plane is landing and that seems to relieve the pressure quite a bit.
I find that this Asda vapour rub is really no different to the branded Vicks variety at all. They smell just the same to me and do the same job so why pay more. In fact the pots look very alike too with the Asda pot being blue with a blue lid and the words, "for clear cool breathing," written on it.
The list of ingredients are given as such: Petrolatum (Soft Paraffin) , Camphor , Menthol , Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf Oil (Eucalyptus Oil) , Thymus Vulgaris (Thyme Oil) , Juniperus Mexican Oil (Cedarwood).
