Advantages: They work
Disadvantages: Noisy lid
Bach Rescue Pastilles are amazingly calming and soothing.
These pastilles contain natural flower remedies to help you cope with pressure and stress. I wasn't expecting them to work when I tried them but thought if they helped a little bit it would be worth it. I was extremely stressed and it was causing something that felt like asthma - I felt like I couldn't breathe properly and nothing I did made any difference. So I thought I'd see what they had in Boots and wasn't planning to buy anything like this until I saw it right in front of me when I walked through the door (good marketing I thought) and remembered that a friend had used the spray and told me it worked wonders. I didn't think the spray action would be very calming and didn't think anything alcohol based would really help so I decided to give the pastilles a go.
For £5 for a 50g tin they were definitely worth trying and being alcohol free and natural they're not likely to do any harm.
As soon as I left Boots I tried to open the tin to try one which was incredibly stressful! Walking down a crowded street I was pulling the lid like crazy and it wouldn't budge - I managed to force it in the end and just about avoided spilling pastilles all over the street. I was unimpressed and felt like they were already stressing me out more which really wasn't the aim. Then I read the instructions on the back of the tin and realised how delightfully simple it is to open. You just press the middle of the lid and it pops off, then when you want to put it back on you press the sides and it pops back on. It's so simple and calming when you know what you're doing but I wouldn't recommend trying it without looking at the instructions. My only complaint would be the noise it makes when it pops on and off which really isn't calming.
The pastilles themselves (when you eventually get to them) are small, round and pale orange. Kind of wine gum type texture but less chewy. Everything about them is soothing - the colour, the size and shape (just sits perfectly on the tongue), the taste, the texture. They taste lovely and sweet and subtle with a delicate orange and elderflower flavour. When you suck they almost coat your mouth and throat with their delicious flavour and you can just inhale and feel it working its magic.
I was expecting them to have a mildly calming effect at best but when I had the first one and breathed the flavour in the effect was instant. My chest had felt tight and I felt like I couldn't take a full breath but as I sucked one of these pastilles and inhaled the aroma it was like my lungs just opened out again and I managed to take a proper breath for the first time in four days. I don't know how or why but something in them solved the problem that nothing else I'd tried had worked on. It wasn't that they just felt calming and relaxing because I had tried relaxing in different ways and it hadn't worked. Something in those flower remedies really does work!
Aside from the orange and elderflower flavourings, gelling agent, sweetener etc the active ingredients are:
Star of Bethlehem - for trauma and shock
Clematis - for the tendency to pass out
Cherry Plum - for fear of mind giving way, breakdown, anger
Impatiens - for irritability and tension
Rock Rose - for terror and panic
Made with natural colour and flavour and they are sugar free.
I would recommend trying these even if you don't recognise any of the above symptoms - I didn't have any of those and didn't even feel particularly stressed apart from the breathing but it still worked!
As soon as I had one I felt almost completely back to normal. Over the next couple of days whenever I could feel my breathing trying to go again I would have another and it would stop it the problem in its tracks. After a total of about five pastilles I was back to my old self again. And I've still got almost a full tin just in case anything stresses me out again.
I even just tried another one while writing this review just to remind me what they were like - I didn't think I was stressed but they had an instant calming effect yet again.
So whatever is stressing you out I would really recommend trying these and personally I think they're a bargain at only £5 for a tin - it doesn't look very big but there are loads in there and you don't need many to feel an effect.
Just do remember to read how to open the tin before you try it!
Summary: Buy some!

- 10/02/09 Great review.
I was very interested to see, "Impatiens - for irritability and tension." My rabbit will eat my impatiens (busy lizzies) when out in our garden in the summer, given half a chance. Perhaps I should let him, so they can help him "chill out". |

- 09/02/09 I'm dubious myself, that these had any more effect than placebo, but if they worked for you, as you say, no harm done!
