Advantages: Great service, thorough eye test

Disadvantages: Poor choice of frames for kids

I have been wearing glasses for about 15 years now and was originally a customer with Specsavers but about 4 years ago I changed to Boots because I felt that anytime I went in there, I was being rushed out of Specsavers, as they were just too busy.

I am writing about my experience of my local Boots Optician in High Street, Falkirk.

When the card came in from Specsavers for my regular eye test, I decided to find out from friends and family what they thought about other opticians and that's what made me choose Boots. I rang them up to make an appointment and was given a time for the following week. My first impression was good, they woman on the phone was professional, and polite. When I first went into the shop I was greeted and shown to the waiting area. I was taken into a side room for the eye test and this was where Boots excelled in my opinion. The eye test was much more thorough than I was used to. The optician is very friendly and takes the time to explain what she is doing and why. Once the test is over the optician introduced my to a different member of staff that would help me pick out new frames and answer any questions I have about them. I ordered my glasses and paid a deposit for them and that was me done. I received a phone call about 3 or 4 working days later to say my glasses were in the shop to collect. I went in that afternoon and was sat down to check the fit of the new glasses and have any adjustments made to them. That was four years ago and I still receive the same care and attention every time since then.

This is not a particulary big shop but they have a good selection of adults glasses to suit everyone's budget. The shop is well staffed with people that really know their products. They have 2 opticians that seem to be very busy and you would have to wait about a week for an appointment.

I also now take my 7 year old daughter here for her eye tests. For a child the eye tests may be carried out every six months at first to ensure they have the correct prescription. I think they are fantastic with kids. They all speak directly to my daughter instead of speaking through me which makes her feel important and that her views count. When it came to choosing frames it was a bit more difficult. They do not have a great selection of frames for kids and of course there is also the size issue. They probably only had about 30 frames for kids and that covered babies, teenagers and everyone in between, for boys and girls. They had no character frames just plain metal or plastic frames in a variation of colours. These also ranged in price from Free with NHS voucher to £54.

I recently had to take my daughter back as she has lost her glasses. My daughter was having real trouble finding frames she liked and eventually the woman quietly suggested we try a different optician with a bigger selection so we did and managed to choose a pair in less than 5 minutes. I know this type of thing is not good for business but I loved her honesty and I am very grateful to her. My daughter is very happy with her selection.

This is a great optician that I would definitely recommend for a thorough eye test. The customer services is faultless. The only thing that lets them down is the poor selection of frames available to kids, and for that reason I am taking away 2 stars, at least until they get in a bigger and better selection.
