Apples really are good for you. I have done a lot of research on this prior to writing this opinion and I was really quite amazed at the benefits of apples. There is overwhelming scientific research proving apples promote good health. Apples contain numerous vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that are enormously beneficial. Some of the latest research indicates that eating apples every day may help prevent illnesses such as cancer and heart disease. Here are some very interested facts: CHOLESTEROL REDUCTION ------------------------ Apples and apple juice contain phenolic compounds (phytochemicals) that act as antioxidants against LDL (low-density lipoproteins). This is the "bad" cholesterol that clogs arteries. Antioxidants reduce or prevent oxidation in certain cells, thus preventing cell or tissue damage. Eating apples not only lowers cholesterol, it also improves the ratio of beneficial high-density lipoproteins (HDL) to harmful LDL. Apples are also an excellent source of pectin, a soluble fiber found in most fruits and vegetables. A number of nutrition studies have proven that pectin also helps reduce cholesterol. CANCER PREVENTION & HEALTHY LUNGS ------------------------------------ There is growing evidence that eating apples may help prevent lung cancer. The National Cancer Institute has reported that foods containing flavonoids, like those found in apples, may reduce the risk of lung cancer by as much as 50 percent. Apples have the highest concentration of flavonoids of any fruit. A scientific study found that phytochemicals from the skin of an apple inhibited the reproduction of colon cancer cells by 43 percent. These findings supported earlier research that indicated antioxidant flavonoids appeared to reduce the incidence of lung cancer. Apples are highly recommended for cigarette smokers, like me, who are more prone to acquiring lung cancer. WEIGHT LOSS
-------------- Apples are a delicious source of dietary fiber, and dietary fiber helps digestion and promotes weight loss. A medium apple contains about five grams of fiber, more than most cereals. Also, apples contain almost zero fat and cholesterol, so they are a delicious snack and dessert food that's good for you. ESTROGEN RETENTION --------------------- Apples contain boron (the reason why I have put this opinion here), a mineral, which studies have shown, helps women maintain estrogen during menopause. Retaining estrogen reduces hormone-induced symptoms, helps protect against heart disease and promotes bone health. Other scientific studies have shown that those who eat apples regularly have a lower chance of having a heart attack and strokes. Apples also have a certain ingredient that may reduce the build up of dental plaque and therefore help prevent gum disease. Eating fresh apples is always good for you, but to get the full nutritional benefits associated with eating apples you should eat at least one fresh apple every day. After learning so much about apples and their healthy benefits, it has now become a necessary part of my diet and I hope that fellow members, who read this opinion, will also make it part of theirs

- 16/07/01 Trouble is, I run the risk of my crowned front teeth getting stuck in an apple if I bite into one, so I have to cut it into pieces and I'm so lazy ;{} L |
