Advantages: Soothing Effect

Disadvantages: Calamine Lotion Fragrance

My husband decided to take my son out a few weeks ago when we had that extremely lovely hot weather which alas seems like a distant memory now. It looks like we may get forty days of rain right enough, however I digress. We are very particular about ensuring that our six year old son is literally caked all over in factor 50 and total block to keep him safe to enjoy fun in the sun. Hubby on the other hand thought that it simply was not hot enough for him to require cream himself. Big mistake however oh boy did he suffer the consequences when he returned home in the evening glowing redder than poor old rudolphs nose.

I as many of you will know am a registered nurse an occupation which I thoroughly enjoy and one which gives me immense pleasure however it does come with a downside in that I am called upon to treat sometimes the impossible from friends and family, when actually hospital treatment really should be the desired course of action. As a result I tend to have an extremely well stocked first aid kit for all of those emergencies that tend to present themselves from time to time, which contains literally a plethora of weird and wonderful tried and tested lotions and potions for most eventualities.

Hubby removed his shirt and I literally could not believe what I was looking at it really was a severe case of sunburn which consisted of severe redness, blistering and split skin. I really did try to advise him to go to A and E however he refused. I administered a product called Aquacel cool gel on the worst areas a product I have to say which is used in the treatment of radiation burns in particular for those who receive certain cancer treatments (please be advised however that this product requires a prescription I just happened to have some in my medical bag). Around the rest of the area I put on a fantastic product which is used generally for the treatment of milder sunburn which is called Care + Aqueous Calamine Cream. I would highly recommend keeping a tub of this in your first aid kit as it really does come in useful and won't cost the earth at around £1 for a 100ml tub from any local chemist.

The product comes packaged in a little white tub with a screw top lid and a safety seal. Inside is a very thick cream which is pink in colour with a rather pleasant calamine fragrance taking you back to those chicken pox days. It is vital before applying this cream like all medicines that you read the product instructions contained on the tub as this item cannot be used by everyone. This aqueous cream has a mild astringent action and should be applied topically to the skin, this will provide a soothing effect. Although it is primarily used in the treatment of sunburn it can also help to soothe other minor skin ailments and conditions. The product is suitable for use by adults and children alike as long as they are not of course allergic to the ingredients.

When using the cream it ideally should be applied to dry clean skin however in hubbys case he was in too much pain to have the area cleansed first so on this occasion it was just applied liberally to the areas that were affected by the sunburn. Namely the back of his neck and shoulders which were the worst areas not covered by the Aquacel Cool. I have never really had a painful case of sunburn myself however my husband told me that he felt the benefit of both of the products that I had applied and noticed a cooling effect almost immediately which went someway to providing a bit of relief although I have to say he did not sleep very well for a good few days after his experience. I think that a lesson had been learned here finally. Another plus point with this product is that as it has a thick consistency so you can see where you have put it hence no need to keep blindly going over the same area. It is extremely cheap to buy too so you can literally slap it on (well perhaps slap is the wrong word to use in the case of sunburnt shoulders!!! Would probably have been divorced by now had I done that to him hee hee).

This product as previously stated should only be used once product ingredients have been studied and there is no recognised allergy particularly to phenoxyethanol. If pregnant or breastfeeding advice should be gained from a doctor or pharmacist before use. The manufacturer states that there have been no known side effects to date with using this product however if any are spotted stop use and consult a medical professional.

Overall a fantastic product however if you think that a condition is severe then go straight to Accident and Emergency for appropriate treatment

Summary: Soothing

Thanks for this info. I will get my mother-in-law to bring some over as I probably won't be able to get it here. My son and husband get burnt terribly even when they have sun block on. It really spoils their enjoyment of sunny days and swimming etc. Good review.
