Advantages: It's reliable, clear!

Disadvantages: The price!

I scare easy when it comes to thinking I may be pregnant, especially after becoming pregnant 'by accident' (ok so it was my stupidity and I don't regret it but I don't want it happening again, anytime soon anyway) and I was expecting twins! So the other day was one of them days I was a little nervous, having had the contraceptive implant in my arm about a year or so ago my periods are irregular anyway meaning I can't really rely on them to inform me whether I've missed one due to pregnancy or not so I went to Boots to purchase a pregnancy test just for peace of mind.

Heading straight towards the pregnancy tests I knew which one I was going to choose, the Clearblue test as that is what I've always used, even when I found out I was expecting my twins so I knew they were reliable. Although the test does come with a hefty price tag and you can buy shops own brands, even in double packs much cheaper. There are a few different tests you can buy in the Clearblue brand but the one I always pick up is this basic one which is over £7 to buy, but there is also the +plus version now which costs just over £8 in Boots - advantage card points apply as well though!

I picked up the plus version, it works exactly the same as this only you can use it before your period is even due to tell if you are pregnant, only up to 4 days before but if you are actually trying for a baby those extra 4 days could make alot of difference I'm sure.

The test comes in quite a thin pale blue cardboard box. Clearly telling you it's a Clearblue test with a picture of the test on the front. Inside the box you have your test, wrapped securely in a foil wrapper and a set of instructions and guidelines on how to use the test and what to expect and look out for which is helpful if you havn't used one at all, or havn't used this particular test before.

The test itself is a white plastic, pencil length device, with a blue plastic 'cap' at the end which needs to be pulled off to use it. There are two small windows on the body of the white stick one is an oval shape and one a smaller diamond shape. These windows are explained to in the notes provided in the box as it is these you will be looking at for your results!

To use the test you need to take off the blue cap to enable you to test your wee on the colour changing tip. You can either wee directly onto the tip or on wee in a clean container and dip the test tip into it. The tip changes colour to inform you that your wee is being absorbed - therefore showing you it's working. It changes pink in colour when your urine is being absorbed. For me personally the colour changing aspect is a waste, you will soon know if your test has worked or not from the lines shown in the windows and if you wee into a container you will definitely know that the tip is going to be covered adequately by your urine when you dip it in and hold it there. On the instructions you are advised to dip the tip for 5 seconds, and when it changes colour hold it for another 5 seconds. Once this is done you then have to wait 2 minutes. Everytime I've used this my results have come up literally within seconds, but I suppose it says to wait 2 minutes just in case the lines in the results window do change from the first few seconds you look at it into the next minute or 2.

Your results line will show in the oval window, either by a blue negative sign or a blue plus sign, obviously the minus line meaning you are not pregnant and the plus meaning you are. However the small diamond window next to it needs to have a blue line in it as well just to show you the test has worked. If the blue line doesn't appear in this window then it means your test hasn't worked. The test could not work for a few reasons, one being it has been held in your urine for too long and it has absorbed too much or it could mean that the colour tip was not held downwards or laid flat after testing your urine. Unfortunately if this happens you do need to buy a new test and test again as the result given may not be accurate. You can wait up to 10 minutes for the line to appear in the control window but if one doesn't appear by then, then the test hasn't worked.

Using this test is easy, I prefer to urinate into a container as it a little more hygienic and my results have always been clear, given to me within seconds and reliable. I feel just urinating directly onto the stick can be awkward, messy and you have more chance stopping the test from working by weeing too much on it which of course whilst in mid flow is a bit difficult to stop and pull the test away without making too much of a mess. I know the test comes with a hefty price tag, but in my opinion it is always reliable and the results are clear. The fact the test comes with a cap on the testing tip means you can place the cap back on and keep the test as a keepsake, whether it's good or bad news depending on preferance and what you want to remember. Giving the stick a little wash and placing the cap back on means you don't have to touch the testing tip again but you can always see your results which could be a fantastic memory and keepsake. I'd reccomend using this test to anybody who needs to use one, even with the high price, from my own personal experience these tests have always given me accurate results in a short space of time and it has took me no longer than 5 minutes to complete my pregnancy test!

Summary: A reliable pregnancy test!
