Advantages: Good for joints
Disadvantages: Too much vitamin A
Cod liver oil is an oil derived from the liver of the cod fish.
It is veryrich in the omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA, and is also indicated as a Vitamin supplement due to the high level of vitamin A, vitamin D and vitamin E.
The main benefit of this nutritional supplement is that it can reduce the negative consequences of arthritis. In my case, although I do not suffer from it, I have some joints which can become a bit rusty, particular in winter, and I tend to take this product on a irregular basis, primarily because when I travel on business, which is very often, I do not take the tablets with me.
Scientific studies have proved that cod liver oil also has positive consequences on your hearth, on your brain and I recently found out, even on your nails!
However, due to the high level of Vitamin A, it is widely accepted that pregnant women should not take cod liver oil. There have also been debates on whether the fact that the liver of fishes in general may absorbe abnormal levels of mercur does not end up making the product itself unsafe.
I used to get cod liver oil from a chemistry in Marseille which also specialize in other nutritional products, but this was when I was travelling to France and Marseille more regularly.
These days I buy it from SevenSeas (I will review that product separately). I buy "Jointcare origilnal" which I normally find at Boots in offer 3 for 2. It contains "pure cod liver oil" and Vitamins D and E and it says that pregnant women should seek the advice of a doctor, but does not say they should not take it at all.
When I was younger I remember that my grandfather used to tell me that they had "natural" cod oil and they used to serve a sppon raw to the kids and he hated the taste of it. The product I use is tasteless, I put a capsule in my mouth and swallow it, the one from the chemistry in France was actually quite "fishy" in its taste and I had to wash my mouth after taking it, even if I had swallowed it.
Summary: Good for joints, but be careful if pregnant

- 08/08/09 Might like to proof read this, as there are quite a few typos and words which don't quite work. For example, 'absorbe' and 'mercur' aren't English words and you mean a chemist, not a 'chemistry'. |
