Advantages: Recommended by dentists
Disadvantages: Taste and temporary staining
Corsodyl mouthwash is one of the few mouthwashes on the market to be recommended by dentists. It is mainly used to treat problems such as bleeding or irritated gums but it is also extremely effective on mouth ulcers.
The active ingredient in Corsodyl is chlorhexidine digluconate and you are advised on the bottle not to use it if you are sensitive to this, although such sensitivity is rare.
Corsody has antibacterial properties which work to inhibit the formulation of plaque on the teeth. It is best used on its own and not at the same time as you clean your teeth with toothpaste; the manufacturers recommend that you wait at least five minutes after cleaning your teeth before using it or its effectiveness will be reduced.
Corsodyl mouthwash is ideal if you suffer from gum disease (gingivitis), which can be identified by gums bleeding during brushing, for use after dental treatment or surgery, to control thrush and conditions such as denture-sore mouth and to maintain a healthy environment in the mouth. Instructions for use for each of these conditions are on the label.
The downside to Corsodyl is that it will stain the teeth during use but this is not permanent and will be removed with normal brushing once treatment has stopped. You can, however, help to eliminate this risk by not drinking tea, coffee or red wine for an hour or so after treatment. A scale and polish will remove any stubborn staining.
Corsodyl is not dangerous for pregnant or breast-feeding women but, in such cases, you are advised to consult your doctor before using it.
Made by Glaxo-Smith-Kline, Corsodyl contains, besides chlorhexidine digluconate, ethanol, macrogoglycerol hydroxystearate, ponceau, anise oil, peppermint oil and water. The taste is not particularly pleasant but the treatment is so effective that it is well worth tolerating.
Corsodyl is widely available from pharmacies and many supermarkets at around £3.99 for 300mls. It comes in a dark brown tough plastic bottle which is further cellophane wrapped and has a pink label for the original version and a green label for the mint version.
Summary: Considered the only truly effective mouthwash available for gum disease
