Advantages: FANTASTIC, FAST-ACTING ANTIBACTERIAL MOUTH WASH THAT AIDS MANY ORAL HEALTH PROBLEMS!
Disadvantages: DOESN'T TASTE NICE AND HAS A VERY STRONG, LINGERING AFTERTASTE...
Some people are born lucky with their pearly white natural gnashers...unfortunately I'm not one of them.
Having been plagued in my early twenties with several agonising abscesses, I unfortunately ended up losing two teeth to the deadly parasitic infections.
Then again last year a new abscess started to grow on the top of one of my treasured two front crowned teeth, and I was devastated as I recognised the pain immediately, knowing I had to act fast...
Never one to do things 'normally', my horrendous tiny 'visitor' decided to start attaching itself painfully last May Bank Holiday Sunday therefore in a desperate attempt to avoid this latest possibly excruciating pain taking hold, I immediately booked an Emergency dental appointment via my local surgery's number.
Queuing up in a frighteningly long line that cool, misty morning - amidst the realisation of last year's madly hyped dentistry shortage was most definitely true and acute; I worried just what damage this individual, unwanted little mouth guest was going to cause me this time.
Well, needless to say, the news wasn't good.
An immediate 5 day course of broad spectrum anti-biotics was prescribed, after a hastily arranged X-ray showing the horrid little spot-like growth attaching itself to the jaw line of my upper right tooth - plus two bottles of 'Corsodyl' mouthwash to try and keep a lid on the worse of the external infection.
Now Corsodyl and I have been acquaintances of old for many a year now - as its strong-acting antibacterial ingredients have been an absolute oral life saver at times.
Bleeding gums, mouth ulcers, dental work and the like, have all been aided by the healing power of this super solution in my past.
Therefore, driving along to the nearest open chemist on that miserable day last year in floods of horrified tears, at least I know I had a pharmaceutical ally in my dear old friend Corsodyl...
One week later I was at my usual dentist's (the handsome Mr.Clark!), undergoing another X-ray to ascertain the damage the dratted abscess was, if anything, still doing. The pain was blessedly now under control, but I had to undergo quite extensive treatment - both expensive and distressing culminating in a new crown being fitted.
Throughout my dealings with the handsome Mr.Clark that time round, he advised I stay on Corsodyl three times a day for the duration of my visits.
The usual maximum length the bottle advises is 1 month for gum disease, however my dentist assured me it was safe to use for a couple of weeks longer, as long as use was discontinued in the long term. The reason for this being that Corsodyl is no ordinary mouthwash to be used every day - such as the ones we see advertised on TV, this is powerful stuff due to the 0.2% chlorhexidine digluconate and 7% ethanol content.
My dental practice sells this in the 300ml bottle, both in the original (yukky) flavour, and the mint one I always use.
Now I'm not saying its pleasant stuff, but it is fantastic in helping many mouth problems, such as irritated or bleeding gums and mouth ulcers as well as issues such as mine.
This can be given out on prescription but very sparingly; I think both dentists and doctors alike, prefer if you pay for it yourself.
The last time I priced it up in Wilkos it was £3.79, a very reasonable price for something that will last a good fortnight if used the recommended 10ml twice a day.
The white lid to the brown plastic bottle can be used as a measuring tool as per the instructions on the back printed label.
Stating Corsodyl can be used to: '...inhibit the formation of dental plaque' and to: 'Treat and prevent gingivitis' as well as: 'manage oral thrush & denture sore mouth'; I personally think its amazing stuff!
The instructions state to swill around the mouth for one minute - plus give details as to how to use the antibacterial solution, depending on your own personal oral problem area.
GlaxoSmithKline - the manufacturers of this wonder liquid, also sensibly emphasis to contact your own dentist if symptoms persist.
There is usually at least a couple of years on the Use By Date; with the best results obtained when you don't either brush your teeth or eat/drink straight afterwards.
There is a warning on the bottle re tooth discolouration too, but I have never encountered any problems of that kind, and I've been using this product for more than 20 years now. It does advise what to do if this occurs and stresses it's not permanent.
It certainly isn't an issue that would stop me ever using this merchandise - I have of course tried the less potent mouthwashes too, but have never encountered anything as effective as this stuff.
Whatever oral mouth problem I have endured in the past, I have always used this wonderful liquid. It's not a pleasant aftertaste at all, but surely that's a small price to pay for something you can feel making a great difference to your mouth's health within a day or two?
It's not often I write a serious review but this is a serious topic, and I can wholeheartedly recommend Corsodyl to any of you out there who are experiencing any of the aforementioned problems.
I think it's wonderful it can now be purchased over the counter, so to speak, back in my day it was a prescription only aid therefore not so easily available.
Give it a go if you feel it will help you, or at least ask your dental practice about this item's reputation and effectiveness. You won't be disappointed, I can guarantee it!
Summary: AN EXCELLENT PRODUCT THAT PROMOTES HEALTHY ORAL HEALTH WITH ITS ANTIBACTERIAL PROPERTIES.

- 10/04/09 Brilliant review, i just wanted to add that I use the mouth wash loads for my patients at the hospital and have seen some quite bad staining in some people. We always try to limit the usage of this to 2 weeks at a time when possible. sometimes we have to use it slightly longer. As you said though, some people use it everyday and never have a problem. |
