Covonia Vapour Drops
Advantages: Easy to use and suitable for almost all ages, fast working
Disadvantages: Doesn't keep you going because you need to keep the handkerchief close to your nose
There are few things in life which can make me feel as miserable as catarrh. It's not something I get too often but when I do it usually involves crushing pain on my forehead which painkillers alone cannot shift.
Before my daughter came along I would usually just lie down and try to sleep it off, but since her arrival my nasal cavities have given me far more grief, and as any parent will tell you, you no longer have the luxury of retiring to bed in illness when you have little ones to consider.
To add to my woes, pregnancy had a strange side effect in me, which was the onset of hayfever, something which had never bothered me before.
Blocked nasal cavities became par for the course and I would find myself having to use over the counter remedies during spring (which is the worst time for me for hayfever) and constantly blowing my nose.
An outbreak of severe catarrh recently knocked me for six and despite taking 400 mg of ibuprofen, the pain on my head was driving me to distraction. I checked to see what medicine I had in the cupboard and came across Covonia Vapour Drops which I had picked up in Poundland at the start of the cold and flu season.
I am a huge fan of Covonia products - their cough medicine is the most foul tasting preparation available, but also the most effective. I used to be a quite heavy smoker, and in my smoking days if I had a cough it was really painful, not to mention annoying and Covonia, to my mind anyway, loosened up the cough almost immediately - well certainly after the initial splutter upon tasting it had died down.
Covonia Vapour Drops come in a small 15 ml bottle and are very easy to use - you simply sprinkle a few drops on a handkerchief and inhale the vapour. What I like about them is the moisture dries off quite quickly, meaning you get the benefit of the vapour without having to use a soggy tissue.
The smell you get from these drops is quite strong, with the overwhelming scent being that of menthol, although they also contain peppermint oil, eucalyptus oil, Cajuput Oil, Spile Lavender Fragrance Oil and, rather less fragrantly, Industrial Strength Methylated Spirit.
What amazed me about them was how quickly they actually worked - within a minute of inhaling the product my sinuses felt clearer and the headache abated slightly. I also found the smell to be immediately comforting too - although I wonder if much of that is due to the menthol smell which reminds me of Vicks and childhood.
However don't be fooled by this statement into thinking that this is a miracle product that will keep you going throughout the day - because as soon as I removed the handkerchief from my nose, the pain around my head returned. As my day involved driving a car and having several chores to do around the house, it wasn't really practical to have the handkerchief close to my nose at all times.
If I had been able to sit down or lie down with the handkerchief close by for any length of time I am sure this would have worked more effectively.
However this was an extreme case of catarrh and I have also used this on my daughter who has had blocked sinuses and a severe sore throat recently overnight and this really helped alleviate the pain she had in her throat in the morning. She even commented that just sitting with a handkerchief which contained some of the vapour drops made her nose feel less blocked very quickly, also giving her some relief from the pain in her throat.
The vapour seems to be quite long lasting too - certainly the aroma lasted for most of the night and still lingered in the morning when we have used it overnight.
Since I started using this periodically I have found my nasal airways to be far clearer, and as someone who tends to put up with things until they become critical, I am wishing I had started using this a whole lot sooner.
I plan on using this overnight when my hayfever starts to kick in as I find it seems to help prevent any congestion in the first place using it this way.
Covonia Vapour Drops are suitable for use by all, except for babies under the age of 3 months. They obviously are for external use only but as the bottle states, they genuinely do offer effective relief from nasal congestion and I would highly recommend you give them a try if your nose is blocked and causing you discomfort and pain.
Summary: A great little product from Covonia
