Advantages: They actually work on UTI`s
Disadvantages: Not everyone will like the taste
Can help prevent Kidney stones & Remove toxins from the blood. In Native America Cranberries were used for blood poisoning. Small amounts of of fresh cranberries, lowers the amount of Calcium in the urine preventing stones to form. However large amounts taken regular can encourage stones, due to high oxalates in them. They prevent E.coli, one of the commonest causes of Urinary tract infections, from attaching itself to the walls of the bladder. My Mum always suffered with UTI, but now has just one small carton of Cranberry Juice a day to prevent it, and she has never had any UTI`s since...it works. The higher the quality of the Cranberry juice the better the results. Look on carton first, some contain just 10% cranberry, the rest made up of water & other ingredients. Which probably helps it sell as it tastes better. Personally I`m not over keen on the taste of it, but a small carton straight from the fridge can go down quick. Eating Fresh cranberries is the best though, just 3oz(75g) is as good as drinking 10fl oz(300ml). If you actually have an infection it is best to double this amount. Fresh fruit is also better due to the high sugar, in most juice drinks. To sweeten the fruit, mix with a sweeter fruit eg. pears or sweet apples ...rather than add sugar. Fresh cranberries keep for weeks in the fridge. You can also get them Frozen in some supermarkets. Good source of Vit C and in the fresh fruit there is only 15 caories per 100g.

- 14/09/07 Hi
You may possibly want to add a small updated note to your review that warns people about the possible dangers of consuming cranberries daily.
It says that cranberries are a cure for kidney stones but unfortunately updated research 7 years on shows serious health implications linked to cranberry use for certain people.
I'd really hate for anyone to read the good info you've put about cranberries without at least being able to see the serious warning too.
As you say in your article, cranberries and cranberry juice are regularly suggested for UTI's etc.
Either -
a) taking daily in small amounts to avoid cystitis
b) taking in large amounts to cure cystitis
However we now know that for a lot of people, regular consumption of cranberries can actually cause kidney stones!
Kidney stones are extremely painful & problematic.
There is a lot of information available on the internet about cranberries & kidney stones so everyone can check it out.
Cranberries unfortunately are one of those things that have been recommended for donkey's years for cystitis so word of mouth ensures they are still one of the most recommended cures - unfortunately not many people keep up with the research about the pitfalls we now know about ie 'kidney stones' so people get the "good advice" but never the warning. Grrrrr....
Bas ic summary to the research - It was always thought that people with regular bouts of UTI's (Urinary Tract Infections), cystitis etc were likely to develop kidney stones as it seemed to be a trend - however the link was then made - those who regularly have UTI's were the ones who often drank the most cranberry juice - test were carried out & research showed the link.
Cranberr ies really are good for you - they can be really beneficial in small doses - BUT for a lot of people they pose a substantial (not to be ignored) risk of kidney stones, especially if they also happen to either be pre-disposed to renal problems of if they also consume other foods that are known to cause kidney stones, then the combination can be too much for the system & problems begin.
Hope this helps a bit.
Kidney stones really are something you don't want to wish on even an enemy!

- 05/08/00 Cranberry juice is of course great with vodka and/or grapefruit. It makes a fantastic hangover cure (without the vodka!) and is perfect when you have a cold or flu as the taste cut thru the nastiness in your nose and mouth. |

- 02/08/00 I have a good glass of Cranberry every day, and have been known to mix it with a Gin and ice. |
