Advantages: soothing, lasts a while

For a few years now I have had a light case of eczema, it is not quite as extreme as some I have seen but I do have sensitive skin. Since I have this, I have to use soap free products and unscented things as it will really irritate my skin so this is why I use sensitive products. I do find it had to find them in shops as even the ones that consider themselves sensitive seem to really irritate me. I have been to the doctors to see what they have as any ideas to consider to me and this is when I first came across this product, Dermol. I had never heard of it because I don't think it is sold in most shops, I was actually prescribed it to use four times daily and see if it made a difference to me.

The product is described as being an antimicrobial emollient and moisturiser for the management of dry and pruritic, itchy skin conditions, especially eczema and dermatitis and for use as a soap substitute. The dispenser comes in a 500ml lot which actually lasts quite well, depending on how often you use it. It is originally in a box with directions of use.

The dispenser is a light green colour with a white dispensing head. On the back it states to apply the lotion to affected areas and to massage it gently into the skin until it has all gone and has been absorbed. It then says to repeat as often as required. The dispense head locks when turned anti clockwise which is good to save the product from coming out. In the bath or shower this can also be used as a soap substitute it says to use as a cleanser instead of ordinary soap or shower gel. It may not lather as much but still creates some kind of lather I have only used it in the shower once but do prefer to keep it as a lotion.

For safety reasons it states to avoid contact with the eyes. It's active ingredients are Benzalkonium Chloride 0.1%, Chlorhexidine Hydrochloride 0.1%, Liquid Paraffin 2.5%, Isopropyl Myristate 2.5% which should be checked before using incase of allergic reactions.

Normally when I go to apply this as I get eczema only on my legs and nowhere else this is the main area I apply. I usually pump the dispense head twice and then apply the cool white lotion onto my skin. At first it just seems to create a white layer on skin then using both hands it really needs to be massaged in for the product to take effect. I do find at first when applying this can sometimes tingle and make me want to itch the affected areas but as difficult as it is to resist the urge it then stops the area from tingling. Once fully set into the skin, it calms the itchiness down and if I have time I will apply three more times that day in repeat motions. Over night I do find myself itching, it doesn't perform miracles but it really does calm down the bumpiness which itching brings out making the skin still look healthy.

I found when I was on holiday with the chlorine in the swimming pool and the sun my skin was very dry on my legs and with having eczema it did start to be very dry so as soon as I was home I applied Dermol like it was running out of fashion. It soon made my legs have a healthy look to it again; the skin had more colour and shine and was no long dry and lifeless on my legs. It does definitely moisturise the affected areas and for this I am very much thankful. It does need to be used with a stronger cream such as Eumovate or Hydrocortisone if you suffer from eczema quite badly or even a normal sufferer.

Dermol can usually be purchased in most pharmacies; I have never seen it in any supermarkets. It can also be purchased online I saw it on www.pharmacy2u.co.uk for £10.45 but if you are prescribed it, obviously it is a lot cheaper. You can also buy relating products like shower and bath emollient on this website which I actually wasn't even aware of. I have not been able to locate an official website for Dermol as of yet. However, if like myself you do suffer from dry skin or eczema then you may not be aware of this product and it really does help to keep the skin hydrated and is worth the money. If you need further information there is a lot of detail on Google searches or your local pharmacist or doctor will no doubt be able to help you.
