Dioralyte and similar replacement therapies do just what they say, they replace things that the body is running low on. In this case, salts and sugars that are needed for metabolic action in the body. Due to the large loss of water in diarrhoea, salts and sugars will be absorbed into the gut. This is due to the relative low osmolarity. Combined with other anti - diarrhoeals such as loperamide (Immodium) diarhoea should be reduced fairly quickly. Rehydration sachets will not get rid of diarrhoea, but it should ease the dehydration symptoms. High risk patients such as the elderly, children or diabetics should be more cautious. These sachets are dissolved in an amount of water, and can be sipped if neccessary. Although not endorsing irresponsible drinking, i sometimes use rehydration sachets for those hangovers that will just not budge. Another useful use of rehydration sachets is to put them in a big bottle of water on holiday, if you are in a sunny and hot climate. This should help you with hydration when you are too hot.
