Blackcurrant

Introduction - What are they?

Well quite frankly is you had the dreaded stomach bug that has been going around this Christmas - these are the best thing since sliced bread.

They are sachets of Oral Electrolyte Powder that replaces essential body water and salts. In layman's terms they stop dehydration fast.

*****How did I discover them? *****

At 2am on Christmas morning I was awoken by a movement !!! No it wasn't the man himself - it was the most horrendous stabbing pains shooting through my stomach and upper intestines. From that moment on I spent the whole of Christmas day running (and being carried) between the bathroom, not knowing which end to hold over the toilet. Oh Great, my grand-daughter's 1st Christmas and I couldn't even see her.

After my limbs had gone from 2 hours of 'pins and needles' to complete numbness, my partner phone the Emergency Doctor.

----- Diagnosis the virus that was responsible for closing a couple of wards at the local hospital had found its way to me. I had to spend 48hrs in practical isolation!!!

----- Treatment - plenty of water, bed rest and Dioralyte to stop dehydration taking hold. I knew I was already starting to dehydrate by the dizziness and headache that was developing. (God what an attractive sight!!!) Thank God the emergency chemist was open.

*****Packaging and contents.*****

Don't worry I am NOT going to list the ingredients because unless you have a degree in chemistry you probably won't understand them (or like me- don't give a diarrhoea)

Dioralyte Blackcurrant comes in a small white box with purple writing, to reflect the flavour, and 3 odd shapes trying to be happy people relieved by this medicine, maybe you knows? Either that or they are running to be first in the toilet because the product doesn't work.

There are 6 tightly sealed sachets in each box. Which at the price of £3.55 per box I thought was steep but if it works - worth it.

The rear of the box gives clear instructions on who can use the product and what dosage to use.

I was surprised to read that this product can be given to an infant up to the age of 2. The instructions do, however, clearly state children of this age showed be seen by a doctor asap. People suffering from intestine obstruction, diabetes, kidney or liver failure, or on a low potassium sodium diet should seek a doctors advice before using.

All these instructions, precautions and ingredients are repeated on each sachet.

*****How to use & taste*****

For a normally healthy adult the dose is 1-2 sachets dissolved into 200ml of fresh water.

As you pour the powder in there is a slightly sweet smell of blackcurrant - hmm I thought maybe this might taste like Ribena (How wrong can one be!!!)

The milky looking liquid tasted awful. It had a thick, sickly taste that left me feeling I was going to wretch. Luckily it doesn't last long so was bearable.

The solution needs to be made up and drink immediately. Although it does state that it can be stored in the fridge for 24hrs.

You need to repeat the dose after every loose motion (or as the Dr informed my partner - after each time I had 'thrown up')

*****Conclusion*****

They did stop me becoming dehydrated further and helped stop the dizziness and headaches within 2 hours. They wouldn't stop the sickness and diarrhoea - but then they aren't made for that. The taste is bearable after the 1st sachet although the texture strange. They are worth buying and I would recommend them. I do keep a box in the medicine box - oh and apparently they are great for hangovers !!!

Thanks for reading x hev
(also on Ciao)

Summary: well worth the money
