D&A - good thorough exam - make sure you save up! (Dolland & Aitchison)

Advantages: Good eye test , fast turnaround

Disadvantages: Limited range of frames, expensive

I have recently been for an eye check at Dolland and Aitchison and had a very good experience. I had not been for a check for about 10 years - I know this is far too long but as my eyes don't tend to change much - so I expected to have a bit of a lecture about how this was too long etc. But I was pleasantly surprised that only a passing comment was made.

I was given a really throrough eye test - all the usual reading of letters from the screen but also a number of different more unual tests - like following lights and seeing some offset bars - I have no idea what they were trying to check - I'm guessing that some of this is based on peripheral vision - but only because of the sort of tests have on my DS.

Though my prescription hadn't changed I did need some new glasses as my old ones were well past their sell by date. The optician was happy to spend a bit of time with me and look through the options, try lots of pairs on and see what was available. I was a little bit disappointed at the choice of glasses - there didn't really seem to be a great range - lots of different colours but not necessarily lots of different designs.

I ended up choosing a frame from the childrens range - as most of the adult range were all too big for my face. Even though this was from the childrens range the total cost for the glasses was nearly £120 OK so a few measurements were taken but £90 pounds for a set of glass does seem a lot.

Oh well a good job my eyes don't change much in 10 years. I was advised that my glasses would take about a week to be made but I was amazed when two days later I received a call letting me know taht my glasses were available for collection.

Summary: A thorough eye test, but not the choice of frames I expected
