Advantages: Great offers with free eye test and nectar points, lovely glasses and helpful staff

Disadvantages: Quite expensive glasses but have offers too

After recently noticing that reading signs while driving was a bit tricky, I thought I had better get my eyes tested. I receive the www.moneysavingexpert.com weekly email with bargain offers and deals (I highly recommend it), I noticed that they had an offer to have a free eye test at Dolland & Aitchison and receive 500 nectar points, so I took advantage.

I booked the appointment online and received the voucher by email. I had a courtesy call the day before, checking that I was still ok for the appointment and took my vouchers with me. When I went in I was greeted by an assistant who went through a few details with me - name, address, hobbies, when I noticed the eye sight deteriorate, and then went to have the eye test with the optician.

The optician was a very nice gentleman who asked me to check dots and colours and letter and read a short piece of prose while putting different strength lenses in a frame to check the quality of each eye. After about 5-10 minutes he showed me the difference between clear and lenses with the appropriate strength and it was a real eye opener (ha!). I could see the detail of things again!

The optician gave me a form which I think was the prescription and said that I was free to look around the shop if I wished but if I didn't want to get glasses that day then not to worry. I was pleased to see that I wasn't being pushed into purchasing the glasses immediately by the optician. Then I had a pressure test which was like having a shot of air blown into each eye and then asked what kind of glasses I wanted by another assistant. She was very helpful and showed me the variety of glasses and after trying on several we decided on a certain pair, she did tell me about an offer for frames of £89 with the lenses at £60 I could get another pair for less than £89 (frames) for free, so I bought two pairs and made a great saving - a free eye test worth £27.50, a free second pair and 500 nectar points.

I know D&A are by no means the cheapest on the market, but their service was very pleasing, they were not pushy but helpful, and I was impressed with the offers they had. I would recommend them, especially because if you don't want to buy your glasses there then you can just get the free eye test! I think the offer is going until 31st July 2009.

Summary: Good quality high street optician with good service and great glasses, may pay a little extra though
