Advantages: Simple, easy, interesting read.
Disadvantages: None.
In an idle moment, I scanned through DooYoo on smoking. I thought maybe I could review a few brands, discuss the finer points of Marlboro over Silk Cut and look for ideas on getting the smell out of my clothes. I then read the two opinions on this book. 'It's easy, it works'. Hmm, well, I decided ti was worth adding to my next Amazon order, and getting the book. And, two days in, I can report it's working. What Allen Carr does is to make you think about smoking. Why do you really smoke? Why do you really try and kill yourself? Do you need cigarettes? Comprehensively he looks at the problem, the addiction (not a habit, an addiction) that smokers have, analyses it and makes a reasoned arguement as to why it's wrong. After thinkiing hard about smoking for 100 pages, looking at the facts, the reasons Allen Carr believes people smoke (not because it's addictive physically, but due to mental brainwashing), and letting you (even encouraging you) to smoke while reading it, you want to stop. Not give up. Not quit. Stop. There's a subtle but important difference. Without talking down to you, the book explains why, and explains that smokers are not weak people. They are not stupid people. They are addicts. But it's an easy addiction to remove, given the right focus. So, will I remain a non-smoker for the rest of my life? Yes. I sincerely believe I can. I have to confront the fears and master them. I have to enjoy not being a smoker, which is easy. I have to not smoke, which is again easy. I spent most of the last 7 years not physically smoking... Diary: 1 week after. It's been relatively easy so far. Every so often I think I want a cigarette. I take a deep breath, grin and think to myself 'Why?'. I remind myself of the contents of the book. On small aberration after a night out on the beers, I tried a cigar, and not only felt bad about it physically, ment
ally it was not enjoyable at all. I dumped it after three pulls. And I used to think I enjoyed them... 6 months after. No problems at all. I've aced it. No cravings, no desire, no nothing. I must admit to smoking more than a few cigars, but even on my most vulnerable (drunk and feeling a little blue) not even wanted a cigarette. Feeling fitter and healthier as well.

- 24/05/01 I do not smoke, a lot of my friends do. I also do not associate pubs with having a great time although I know I've had many good times in pubs and clubs. Why don't I smoke then? Because I have a strong will power and I believe I have a brain that does not get addicted to things easily. There was a scientific investigation on this - some people have a part of their brain which is bigger than others. This part, if small, means you are less likely to become addicted to smoking, drink and drugs amongst other things. Maybe I'm lucky. Great op. |
