Advantages: tastes nice, calming

Disadvantages: not 100% effective, but you can't win them all

Sometimes Rescue Remedy works for me, sometimes it doesn't. That's my honest judgement. It's hard to explain because even I don't quite know how it works with my interior chemistry. All I know is that when it does work (about 70 percent of the time) it can bring me back from the brink of a panic attack or hyperventilation, or even just calm my nerves.

I keep a bottle with me all the time. I don't even use it that much, maybe once every couple months. I'm not the only person I know who does - I'm a musician, and pretty much all my peers, colleagues and teachers have had some experience with this product. Many of my friends have their own bottle.

The smallest size bottle it comes in does go a pretty long way, and costs about a fiver in your local big name pharmacy. Basically it has a little pipette inside, and you squeeze a couple drops on your tongue if you're feeling jittery or whatever.

It's common in musicians' circles to use this because of the way we seem to live in a state of perpetual stress, particularly as students. I don't know if it really works - maybe it is the placebo effect; maybe it's a legitimate herbal remedy for stress-related conditions. Maybe it's just the fact that it tastes a bit like brandy. All I know is, it is helpful for me most of the time, and for lots of people I know, too.

P.s. In recent months I've been road-testing the pastilles and they're AWESOME. They taste really nice and are sugar-free so you can suck them while you're reading at bedtime. They're good for helping you wind down before bed.

Summary: worth a try if you're not into beta blockers
