Advantages: Softens ear wax to enable easy removal
Disadvantages: Apparently olive oil has the same effect!
After suffering from blocked ears a few years ago, (confession alert: this happened because I was using cotton buds, which is apparently a big no no for your delicate ears!) I went to the doctors for them to be syringed and the nurse told me that first I would have to soften the ear wax by using Earex.
So off I popped to get some, I forget how much it was at the time but you can purchase it nowadays in asda for £2.10 for 10ml. It is sold in a bright yellow box inside which is a small glass bottle with a pipette dispenser concealed within the screw-top lid.
This has a very short life span and goes off quickly, so once you have opened the bottle you either have to use it all within 2 months or throw it away!
The directions recommend you tilt your head to one side, and drop 4 drops of the substance into the ear using the pipette. I had trouble doing this myself so had to get my husband to assist as it was going all over my hair! Once the drops are in, you insert a piece of cotton wool in the outer ear then repeat on the other side (if both ears are affected).
The sensation of the drops going into your ear is a little strange, very cold and you can feel it trickling all the way down your ear canal! The smell of this is very pungent but not unpleasant. Because of this I did my treatments at night before bed, so no one I met in the day would notice the smell!
I hadn't seen any improvement with regards to my hearing by using the drops alone, but after using this for 5 days (as recommended by the nurse) I went back to see her to have them syringed, and I won't go into the details but she certainly cleared my blockages! Afterwards the sounds I could hear were amazing, I had never had hearing abilities like it!
In conversations with others since this time, I have been told that using plain old olive oil has just the same effect, however for some reason I don't fancy putting cooking oil in my ear so this product did the job for me perfectly. If you are on a budget however then maybe olive oil would be the way to go!
Summary: Works a treat

- 13/10/09 I had major problems with my ears in the past. Now a little bit of dampened Olive Oil on a tissue clears the debris very well, and thats not even a third of the price. |
