As a doctor, it is almost within my nature to assume that anything that involves the word 'herbal' is to be ignored. It is a fact that in the medical profession, the majority of us just don't like herbal remedies. They don't have evidence behind them, and we cannot prescribe them, so they cannot work. Yet Echinacea is one of the few things that I always keep stocked in my otherwise relatively empty bathroom cupboard - next to the paracetamol, Ibuprofin, and rennie. So why? Let me first tell you the basics, then tell you about the medical evidence for it, and then say why I take it! Please note that the information below is mainly taken from research papers - ... What do you do when you feel a cold coming on? At the first sign of a tickly throat, I used to reach immediately for the Vitamin C and the Paracetemol. But now my first port of call is Echinacea drops. Also known as the purple coneflower, this herb is used as an ornament in many gardens. But as well as being pretty, it also has the powerful ability to stop a cold before it takes root in your system. Echinacea was well known amongst Native Americans for its ability to treat several ailments: they rubbed it directly into their mouths for teeth and gum pains, and made an Echinacea tea to treat colds, smallpox, arthritis, measles, and mumps. They even ... Read the complete review

~ ~ The ‘mad cabbie’ was driving a fare out to an outlying suburb of Dublin city a few months back, and somehow the conversation got around to health, and the everyday ailments that seem to affect lots of folks. This guy was ages with myself, (young minded middle aged) and like me suffered from a bad chest (prone to chest infections) and arthritis. (In my case caused by too many days out on the golf course during all sorts of weather) I try to take care of myself as best I can, and as a dose of flu can literally lay me up for weeks, I get the flu vaccination at the first signs of cold weather every year. (very effective) And I combat my arthritis with ... Read the complete review

If you had told someone to take echinacea a couple of years ago, the chances are that they would have looked at you a little strangely. "Eki....what?" Indeed even today many people are a little unsure as to what echinacea is, yet it is widely available in supermarkets, chemists and health stores and many people are amazed by the results that it can have, me included. I have been battling with my health for the past 13 months after a botched "routine" surgical procedure and so my immune system is non-existant to say the least. In December I came down with the flu and whilst most people had it for a maximum of 2 weeks, I battled on ... Read the complete review

Echinacea is supposed to boost your immune system (by boosting your white blood cell count I think). I'm not a big expert on Echinacea, and there are some brilliant pieces already on dooyoo by people who seem to know what they are talking about. I do take it on and off however when I feel my immune system needs a boost. The first time I tried it, I was really ill for a couple of weeks, and was a bit disgusted that it hadnt seemed to help. However when I looked into it more, experts recommended taking about 1500 mg when ill, and the tablets I had got from Boots were only 200mg! I learned then that it is always important to try and find out what dosage you ... Read the complete review
