Advantages: Stops skin from drying out, great for excema sufferers
Disadvantages: Is a little bit greasy but if small amounts is used it should not be a problem
My son had very dry skin and as a result after a trip to the doctors she confirmed our concerns, he had excema.
The doctor said as it was mild excema, with care and daily applications of emulsifying ointment the condition would improve dramatically. It would stop the dryness and the urge to itch and scratch the skin.
The doctor had written a prescription for a huge 500g tub of the stuff. It had an easy open lid. This is because in some cases people have excema on their hands and as a result find it very difficult and painful to actually open up the bottles and tubs. It makes the patients life much easier.
*Appearance of ointment*
The ointment is very thick as it is oil based. It has paraffin in it also to help keep skin from drying out. The ointment is colourless and fragrance free.
It is advised to only take small amounts of the ointment when applying onto the skin as it is quite greasy. I found that once it comes into contact with body temperature it almost becomes even more greasy. You also have to make sure that you rub the ointment into the skin and is fully absorbed otherwise the ointment leaves greasy, oily marks on your clothes.
After the first application I noticed my sons skin was much more moisturised then it previously had been and he was no longer scratching his skin or even had the urge to itch. Once you start to use the ointment though you will have to carry on otherwise you just go backwards in the treatment. We found that it worked best after bathing, when your skin is at its driest.
Yes, it really does improve the condition of the skin. Applied twice daily can help keep the skin conditioned and moistuired. It is even good for those that do not have excema, so can be beneficial to all.
We got our emulsifying ointment from the GP as she introduced us to it but you can also get 500g tubs from your local chemist and all Superdrug and Boots stores.
Summary: Beneficial for anyone that has dry skin
