A Great Relief
Member Name: victorias_books
Advantages: Inexpensive, very moisturising, lasts a long time
Disadvantages: Can feel nasty when wearing it
About five years ago I spent a year travelling in Australia, and while there I sustained what I believe to have been an insect bit on the bottom of my leg near my ankle. As a result, I'm afraid to say I scratched at it so much it developed into a painful rash, which far outstayed its welcome. Over the next few months I treated it with a variety of creams, including rich moisturisers. When I slathered the affected areas with the products they absorbed in seconds, yet I found they achieved little, as I needed to apply more just an hour or so later. It got to a point where the rash was constantly irritating me and was very sore. When I eventually went to the doctor's I was prescribed a steroid cream, which I was told to apply modestly and follow it up with a thick layer of emulsifying ointment.
The ointment had to be ordered at the pharmacy, and when it arrived it came in a large tub containing 500g of the product. The tub is unfussy and mostly unadorned, fashioned from white plastic. The ointment itself is semi-transparent and very viscous. To get some ointment out you need to dig your fingers into the tub in order to scoop it out. The ointment smells somewhat like unfragranced Vaseline, and while not particularly pleasant, is not too unpleasant, either. I used a thin layer of the ointment on my foot in the morning, and a thick one at night. Whenever I applied it however, I had to cover it with a loose, old sock as the ointment spoils fabric and anything too tight adheres to it, which does not feel very pleasant. The emulsifying ointment is water resistant, so removing it from my hands after application was often troublesome. I used soap and water on my hands, but this did not remove much of the ointment on my hands, so I often wiped the remainder off with an old towel.
Even on first application, the ointment worked wonders. After several minutes I did not feel the need to scratch my rash (although this relief owed in part to the steroid cream also), and what further put me off scratching was that I did not want to get the thick ointment under my fingernails. I used the two in this way for several weeks, and was absolutely astounded at how rapidly they relieved the itchy sensation, but even more than that, how they vastly improved the appearance of my skin. Prior to beginning treatment my skin was an angry red colour and very inflamed. After a week or two using the medicines however, my skin was still a pink/red, but not anywhere close to as deep a shade as I had become accustomed to. I also have a bit of eczema on the back of my neck, which very often flares up during times of stress. Even when the skin there becomes thick and sore however, just one thin layer will relieve the itchy sensation for up to a week.
I cannot recommend the emulsifying ointment highly enough. A 500g tub cost me just over £4, but 4 - 5 years later I still use it occasionally, but am still on the first tub. I am also very happy to report that the rash has cleared up entirely, and the skin in that area looks entirely unblemished. I would never gave imagined at the time that my skin could be restored to its natural appearance, but am so glad that it is now perfect again. I could not be without this product now, and though I do not need to use it on my rash now, when I use it on my eczema it provides instant relief.
Summary: A great solution to a variety of skin complaints
