Probably the most unpleasant drink I've ever had
Member Name: Mrs_Frank
Advantages: Natural relief of constipation in some instances
Disadvantages: Didn't work for me, taste and texture leave a lot to be desired!
This high fibre drink is available from chemists in packs of 30 sachets for around £5.50/ £6. There is a choice of either lemon or orange flavours. To make the drink, you simply add cold water to a sachet's contents and mix vigorously.
The drink helps to relieve constipation because it contains ispaghula husk which is a natural fibre that helps to ease digestive flow by adding bulk to the stool. This in turn helps to promote peristalsis - the natural process by which food moves through the digestive system without the use of drugs or medicine, just a straightforward drink...
I was prescribed this drink (in the orange flavour) by my GP some years ago when suffering with constipation. My memory of the drink is that it has a horrible artificial orange taste, accompanied by a gelatinous texture which gets worse the further down the drink you get and the longer you take to drink it. I was interested to see that a friend had some the other day and I asked her if I could try some to see if it had improved. I was amazed that it tasted exactly the same as it had 10 years ago, and still jelly-like remnants lurked at the bottom of my cup when I had finished. I can only conclude that the manufacturers think that they have come up with such an effective product that absolutely nothing needs changing.
However, sadly for me this product had very little effect on my digestive system, and I found that drinking a lot more water and eating more healthily had the desired effect without having to imbibe gloopy, unpleasant-tasting liquids. Although this product is seen as being 'natural' I think that the best and most natural way to relieve symptoms of constipation is to alter your diet.
I recommend this as a last resort, but am unlikely to take it again myself.
Summary: Not a nice drink. I'd recommend drinking more water and eating more fruit and veg instead!
