Galbanum essential oil (Ferula galbaniflua) was reputed to be a favourite of Moses’ and is written about in the book of Exodus whose author named it as a component of incense to use in the temple. It was also used for both medicinal and spiritual purposes - the Egyptians used it for embalming as it has a powerful preserving quality. The essence comes from a gum resin obtained from a species of fennel, which is grown in Persia (now Iran). It was used by the Romans in ritual anointings for springtime.
