Advantages: nice, good medicinal
Disadvantages: none
Another one of my weird things that I do apart from eating mash potato dried and also powdered milk and cream and vinegar is my love of garlic. I can eat it till the cow comes home, raw. I love to sit there and chew on a clove of garlic. So there we go off to the supermarket and buy a bulb of garlic and I am quite happy to be found chomping away on it. However there is another side to garlic which a lot of people do not know and that is the medicinal and herbal side. In this review, I will try and tell you about some of the benefits, it has. It has an anti viral effect. Reduces total cholesterol in the blood Reduces fat concentrations in the blood Has an antithrombotic effect It is well know for keeping colds and coughs at bay and there is some evidence to say that it keeps your heart healthy. There are lots of studies around the world where people have been taking garlic tablets or powder and over a 3 month trial, the ones who have been taking this have lowered their cholestorol. Resarch also now shows that taking garlic during pregnancy can cut the risk of pre-eclampsia (raised blood pressure and protein retained in the urine). The studies that have been done also say that it aids to increase the babys birth weight and these ladies were only taking the garlic tablet supplement. My mum who is also going through the change is looking towards herbal medicines, After conventional medicines have failed. She heard about the properties of garlic as since going through the menoupause, her blood pressure is not stabalising and is embarking on a course of these. Another claim to taking garlic is that it reduces the risk of cancer, however a lot of claims of garlic are not proven but some are and at the end of the day it will do you no harm. To grow garlic is easy and this is something
that I intend to do this year, first of all, when you plant the cloves, split them into seperate cloves and put them just below the soil. Pick off when the foliage turns yellow and store in a cool dry place. It is better to try and grown them through the long winter months as they have longer to grow. People are often put off by eating garlic due to the strong smell on breath that it makes, however these days garlic supplements come in many forms if you do not like it pure, such as capsules, powder and creams and tablets and they are odourless so now you do not have to worry about eating it and stinking the house out. Another tip is if you have garlic raw and your breath does smell, try eating some fresh parsley straight after it as this counteracts the smell. Another one of the things that you can do with garlic is give a small amount to your pets. It will do them no harm and I normally give them more in the summer when fleas are around as they do not like to bite the dog and drink the blood when it tastes of garlic. Although this is ok for the small flea or two, if you are infested, it is off to the vet fro Front line. I think this product is well understimated and studies are still on going all over the world. I eat a lot of garlic and where once I was plagued with coughs and colds, I am unlucky if I get one or two a year. My nickname from my friends were that I was the sickly child as soon as one cold went, along came another, not it is rare that I get them. You can buy supplements and tablets at herbshops anywhere or local supermarkets. Prices do vary but it is not an expensive product and would not expect to pay more that £4 for a product. Some are as little as a £1 a bottle. Or for those who like it raw, chew on a clove or two. You never know, it might work for you. If it doesn't at least you can cons
ole yourself with the fact that Count Dracula won't come anywhere near you! Karen :0)
