      Very helpful

An easy to take natural supplement.

      Review of Grape Seed Extract

A natural food supplement, Grape Seed extract is a powerful antioxidant that can be used to benefit the body in many ways. In addition to the antioxidant properties, Grape Seed extract also has anti-allergenic, antihistamine, anti-inflammatory and immune boosting properties and homoeopaths believe it can be instrumental in helping the body fight viruses and allergies.

As many people will know, antioxidants are important nutrients for the skin, as they help strengthen and protect cell membranes from damage.

The antioxidant properties of grape seed extract have been found to be stronger than those of vitamin C and Vitamin E.

**Grape Seed Extract To Fight Those Dreaded Wrinkles!**

In recent times, because of its antioxidant properties, grape seed extract has been considered an anti-ageing wonder supplement. Ageing of the skin is caused by years of physical wear and tear on the body which can be worsened by lifestyle choices, such as a poor diet, smoking and the use of drugs and alcohol.

The use of grape seed extract, together with making improvements in lifestyle where appropriate, can help to reverse some of the damage that has caused lines and wrinkles in the skin.

Many popular anti-ageing products on the market contain grape seed extract as one of their active ingredients, as do many other beauty products.

Apart ageing skin issues, Grape seed extract can also help to fight skin problems such as psoriasis and eczema.

      **Other Uses**

Your body can benefit in many other ways from using grape seed extract. In herbal medicine, it can be used to prevent health problems which include cardiovascular disease, varicose veins, oedema and arthritis. Grape seed extract also acts as a natural anti-histamine, moderating allergic responses by reducing histamine production and boosting the immune system.

Grape seed extract is one of the few antioxidants that can help to protect nerve and brain tissue by penetrating the blood brain barrier, and it may help fight high cholesterol, which in turn improves blood pressure levels.

Another important area that grape seed extract can help is eye health. Grape seed extract is frequently recommended to combat macular degeneration, cataracts, and eye strain.

These are just some of the benefits that one can derive from grape seed extract.

As with any supplement, there are warnings to be aware of. The following advice is taken from my bottle of Grape Seed extract capsules.

"Individuals allergic to grapes should not use grape seed extract.

Grape Seed extract may interfere with the use of blood thinning drugs, such as Warfarin, causing excessive bleeding. Consult your Doctor before taking.

If you are taking any cholesterol reduction medication, consult your Doctor before taking.

Pregnant or breast-feeding women should take medical advice before using this or any kind of supplements."

      Sounds sensible advice to me!

**How Much To Take And Where To Buy**

The recommended dosage of Grape Seed extract is 100mg per day, for an adult.

Grape Seed Extract is widely available in tablet or capsules, some stockists, such as Holland and Barrett, sell Grape Seed extract in a carrier oil format for use in aromatherapy or massage purposes. Others sell Grape Seed Extract capsules combined with other supplements, for example, Green Tea or citrus.

As a vegetarian, I find it very irritating when buying supplements of this nature, to find that they are presented in a gelatine based 'shell'. I have found that 'Veridian' grape seed extract capsules are vegetarian and vegan friendly.

A bottle of 30 x 100mg capsules currently sell in the region of £10.40 from http://www.bodykind.com and various other stockists.

      **My Thoughts and Conclusion**

I have been taking Grape Seed Extract capsules for several months. My reasons for taking it are mainly skin related, as at 53 years of age, I feel that have more than my fair share of lines and facial wrinkles!

Seriously, I must admit that I feel rather self-conscious about these and am trying to improve my complexion. I am also using a day and a night cream from the 'Olay Fusions' range which contain grape seed extract too, so I am bombarding my wrinkles with grape seed both internally and externally!

I have to be brutally honest and say that I have not really noticed any improvement so far. Perhaps I am looking for results too soon, or maybe my years spent out of doors in all weathers(and my smoking habit) have taken too much of a toll on my face!

I do not feel that it is all negative though, as I have noticed that my usual seasonal misery due to my allergy to insect bites, has not been as bad as usual this year, so perhaps the natural histamine element of the grape seed extract is kicking in!

I intend to continue taking the grape seed extract even if it does not improve my facial wrinkles. My family have a history of high cholesterol and although mine is not raised, I would like to keep it that way. I feel that prevention is better than cure in most cases and therefore grape seed extract is worth a try.

It can vary price wise, so it is worth shopping around for the best deal.
