Advantages: Reasonably priced, accurate if used on hard flooring

Disadvantages: Not accurate on carpet

Costing £11.99 from Amazon, Hanson's HX500 electronic bathroom scales are a popular choice for those who want to keep an eye on their weight whilst keeping an eye on the pennies at the same time.

Design & Appearance

With a transparent glass top, the HX500 is an inoffensive looking device which allows you to see whatever flooring surface is underneath it - because of this, the scales blend seamlessly into whatever room they're in. The toughened glass feels thick, and will probably survive without cracking if miscellaneous objects are dropped onto it - not something I particularly want to test however! Because it's glass, the Hanson is easy to clean - I use Windolene wipes which do the job perfectly.

The scales feature a digital screen which displays the weight in digits which are easily large enough to see. To operate, the device requires one of the large flat button cell battery (included), which lasts a long time before it needs replacing - i've owned the product for a couple of years, and it hasn't yet needed a new one. In the battery compartment there's a selector switch which allows you to choose whether you want the display to show your weight in kilogram, stones, or pounds - I keep it set on stone, as it's the only measurement I can fully comprehend (none of this metric nonsense for me!).

Using the Hansen

To operate, simply tap the top of the scales with your foot, upon which the display will activate and a numeric pattern will run across the screen. When a '0' shows in the centre of the display, it's time to hop on. The weight will take a while to settle, but when it does, the number on the screen flashes a few times to confirm your weight. I've found that the HX500 is very accurate - providing you use it on hard flooring that is! If you're planning to use the scales on carpet, don't bother - the weight will be completely wrong! Personally, I don't find this to be an issue - I know it's not trustworthy on carpet, so I don't use it on carpet - simple.

Final Word

Overall, i've been very happy with the Hanson HX5000 Glass Electronic Bathroom Scales in the couple of years since i've owned them. As well as measuring my own weight, they're also accurate enough for me to assess the weight of items i'm holding whilst on the scales - very useful when determining the post office prices for items i've sold on eBay.
