Hanson HX5000 Glass Electronic Bathroom Scale
Advantages: several display options, accurate measurement, can weigh up to 24 stones
Disadvantages: can only cope with one person weighing themselves at a time, needs a little rest between.
I was in the market for a decent set of scales. My previous two sets had been a smart price set, then a more pricey Rosemary Conley set, but when the expensive set was just as useless and broke, I decided to look for a more mid-range set for myself.
I do like to have some awareness of my weight. I know roughly when I am getting too heavy from my clothes, but I know that to work out my body mass index and see how healthy I am I need to know my weight more accurately.
I saw a few reviews for this set back in February, so I decided to get some with my amazon vouchers. The price seems to fluctuate between £10-15. Currently they are £12.
The set is battery operated, but instead of having to use a ridiculous amount of batteries to hold a control panel in my hand, this one is all on the scales, and thankfully my gut is not so big that I can see down and read what it is saying I weigh. The display is digital, and it is large enough for me to read without any difficulty.
The set came with a lithium battery inside it. This is a 3V CR2032. The battery has lasted so far several months of me using it. This is a lot better than my last set, as it would be turned on at the slightest knock and would drain the 7 AA batteries between uses, and it was very expensive to replace them. Here, I notice the display comes on as I pick the set up, and it then tares to zero by the time I place it on the floor. The scales pick up my weight within seconds of me standing on them, and then the scales can be away and back in the cupboard within a minute.
If more than one person wants to get weighed, I have found I need to leave the scale to turn off before we knock it again to turn it on, as otherwise it is a bit temperamental and it does not pick up the 2nd persons weight. This could be because it is usually the kids saying let me have a turn, and there weight is only round about 3 and a half stone each. Therefore it is a lot less than my weight which was originally being measured.
I was worried at first that the main body of the scales is an 8mm thick glass plate. I thought it would either scratch or chip getting it in and out of the cupboard, but it has stayed looking really good. It hasn't even got any dirt or scuffs on it and it is used quite a lot. I am always quite careful, and the rubber feet and metal pieces that calculate the weight underneath the glass protect it from coming too close to my kitchen tiles when I am using it. I have deliberately kept it out of the bathroom where the floor and my feet might be wet causing the product to slip and break.
This set of scales is capable of measuring up to 24 stones in weight, and is said to be accurate to 100g or 1/4 of a pound. My only comment on this is I wish it wasn't. You can't fool this one by standing it on a different tile and pretending you didn't eat two doughnuts yesterday.
You can choose to view your weight in kilograms, the traditional format of stones and pounds, or just pounds. I personally prefer using traditional format as it is the one I grew up with and is quickest for me to know how well or badly I am doing. To switch between modes there is a simple slide switch in the battery compartment.
My overall impression of these is that they are good value. They look quite smart in glass and brushed steel effect. The usage is not too draining on the battery, and it seems reasonably accurate in that if I eat more my weight goes up, less and it goes down, and otherwise pretty much stays the same. I also found it was close to what the nurse weighed me at on her scales at the doctors last time I visited. Battery life has been impressive, and it is refreshing that the money spent includes the battery.
My last set had body fat percentage measurement, and could also store a few readings, and although that sort of thing can be useful, this set is better because it is not trying to be too clever and just works as you expect it to. So I can heartily recommend this set. There is nothing to dislike or complain about, as it just does its job quietly when you want it too, and nothing on it can really go wrong unless you drop it and break it.
Summary: A decent set of digital scales that just does what it is meant to.
